Dad Slugs Man Who Offers Money To Girl For Sex

YORK, Pa. -- What would you do if a man offered to pay your teenage daughter for sex while she was shopping?

Jimmy Hunt punched the man in the face. Prosecutors in York charged Hunt with disorderly conduct and simple assault. But they later dropped the charges after concluding that no jury would convict him.

Prosecutor Bill Graff said you can't take the law into your own hands, but it's likely that they'd get parents who'd say that's what they'd do if it was their daughter.

There's no disputing the fact that Hunt punched Armondo Hernandez in the face after he approached Hunt's 17-year-old daughter while she was shopping for nail polish at a Wal-Mart. Hunt called police after the incident.

Hernandez has pleaded guilty to indecent assault and harassment.

It's the reason for having a jury system.

I agree, many on this site do not.

Fire the police that arrested him.

Prosecute the police that arrested him for running a criminal enterprise.

I'd say give the cops a break, they did there job. One man hit another, what are the cops supposed to do, just take one guys word for why?

If I walked up and slugged somone and made up a good reason, the cop would still arrest me, at least to verify the truth.

DOn't forget, once he's arrested, he gets the right to remain silent and a laywer, hence instead of just holding him and having him incriminate himself.

DOn't prosecute him, but you have to arrest him to at least verify that he's telling the truth, to quote Reagan "trust but verify".

This reminds me of former Pittsburgh Steeler Jack Lambert's advice to kids -- when someone offers to sell you drugs, punch them right in the nose.

The law allows for self-defense.

"Armando Hernandez" menaced a minor. The father protected the minor daughter.

Where is the violation of the law? I don't see it. What could he even possibly be charged with under any existing law on the books? How is this taking it into your hands?

Jury nullification is ALWAYS justified, if the jury can make a fully informed decision.
That's a juries function, to find justice in the case at hand..

Sadly, many so-called conservatives here at FR do not agree:

The father was protecting his kid. With all the kidnappings, I'm suprised he didn't kill the b.......

Agreed. The father used tremendous restraint.

They are supposed to investigate and exercise judgment. They knew why he did it. His daughter was there. They arrested the perp. They object to common citizens defending themselves. It is competition to their business. By arresting everyone they are fair to both sides and the business grows. The only problem is with those pesky dead bodies. It's very difficult to get the dead body to acknowledge their arrest.

When I was in high school, I nominated "Mike Hunt" for student council president. The poor school secretaries read the names of the nominees over the school P.A. system for three days in a row! Every time Mike's name was read, everyone in the school would start gigging. The only problem was that when I wrote down his name for nomination, I had to sign my name to the paper! I did get a little bit of grief for that stunt, but it was worth it!

concluding that no jury would convict him.

In NYC they would. Defending yourself or your family in NYC is a far more serious crime than assault or robbery accouding to the NYC bureaucrats. And what's worse the majority of the bird brained voters there agree.

Why didn't you use your real name?
You should have just written John Smith or John Doe.

If the daugher corroberates, and there is no other obvious motive, yeah ... take the guys word for it. There is an element of common sense in daily life that people seem to have abandoned.

Now the father has an arrest on his record.

If I walked up and slugged somone and made up a good reason, the cop would still arrest me, at least to verify the truth.

They don't need to arrest you. 9/10 times they can determine probable cause simply by questioning the parties involved.

DOn't forget, once he's arrested, he gets the right to remain silent and a laywer, hence instead of just holding him and having him incriminate himself.

What a crappy thing to have to go through for defending your daughter in the United States.

DOn't prosecute him, but you have to arrest him to at least verify that he's telling the truth, to quote Reagan "trust but verify".

Oh please, Armando propositions the guys MINOR daughter, the guy slugs him. Take the report, haul off Armando, give Hunt a pat on the back, and serve and protect and make society a better place.

Go proposition a cop or a DA's 17 year old daughter in the nail polish section of Walmart and see what they think about "taking the law into their own hands".

The biggest inconvenience I would expect have in such a situation is having to be transported with Armando to the hospital because they would have to surgically extract my foot from Mr. Hernadez's ass.

I say prosecut the cops too. They can't be everywhere, and they can't be hauling off everyone who does the right thing. And it usually is obvious who that is.

A bump for a man! I would say he exercised considerable restraint. * Give him a medal. * Fire the police that arrested him. * Prosecute the police that arrested him for running a criminal enterprise.

I'll go along with the medal, and believe me, I'm no big fan of the police, but when the police come onto a scene and one person has hit another, they have to make an arrest. The police aren't a position to make a judgement whether or not the assault was justified or not - all they can do is make the arrest and let the prosecutor sort things out. In my opinion, this case was actually handled properly by the police and the prosecution - a rarity these days...
