CDC's 10 Most Dangerous Dogs List

POSTED: 3:58 PM EST January 14, 2004

Tuesday's fatal dog attack in Harnett County is not as rare as you may think. Dogs kill 10 to 20 people in the United States every year.

Last year in Orange County, 300 dog bites were reported, and 350 were reported in Raleigh.

While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:

Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

The breeds considered most likely to kill are pit bulls and rottweilers, and the CDC says that a chained dog is more likely to bite than an unchained dog.

The CDC also says the majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place, which is why choosing the right dog for your family is crucial.

Right on. Dobies. Got three of them. BUT, they are ALL protective. The trigger for the protectiveness is hard wired. It becomes a matter of where the trigger is set.

We had to send one back that was 6 MONTHS old (!) and already overprotective. He came that way. (He eventually went to a retired Federal judge who LIKES him that way!)

My 18 m.o. grandson plays amongst them every day. I would trust them way before any snippy terriers.

The vet swears that Doxies are the worst!

Sheltie mix here & he's the smartest dog I've ever been owned by. And they are tough critters...bred for sheepherding in the Shetland Isles which is some tough terrain. Mine is edging up on medium size. Had a Golden for a long time--great dog but very, very stubborn. Also have a Westie--sweet, happy critter but dumb as a box of rocks.

Here's my killer pit bull preparing to devour my youngest. Bad breath is her most deadly weapon.

Only humans have responsibilities, animals are given tasks. Babys have rights because they are human (who at maturity will have rights and responsibilities) and because in our society humans are made in the image and likeness of God and therefore must be respected. The further we get from that notion the closer we get to those societies (like pagan Rome) where babies were simply the property of their parents. This is what a dog is, property.

Meanest dog I ever had was a Miniature Pinscher. He looked so cute in the pet store that the wife had to have him. The cuteness wore off in about two months. Then he was the meanest SOB (heh heh) you ever saw. Constantly trying to get out of the house when you opened the door - successful on several occasions. Could take hours to track him down and catch him. Territorial beyond belief - he'd bite you just for walking near him. Finally gave him away. I heard that a couple of years later he was bitten twice by a copperhead and survived (barely).

We have a rottie. She's a big baby, and a gentle giant. She lives and loves to please.

No, really, they're anti-social and vicious, honest:

I agree. Labs are gentle creatures, but VERY protective as well. Great with kids. They are not hyper, and are content to sit at your feet. What more could you want?

I'm really surprised to St. Bernards on the top ten list.

When I was in college I took a course in animal behavior. We had a visiting professor from the University of Chicago who had made a study of wolves. He told us that he would show off when he visited the zoo and walk into a cage of wolves at feeding time and bring them the food. He said the only time he had a problem was when he inadvertenly walked between a female and her pup, and even then it only knocked him down.

He explained that he was able to do this because he knew their body language. He said that domesticated dogs have learned to hide their body language so he would never do this in a cage of dogs. He further said that he would neve, ever do it in a cage of St. Bernards. He said that they were the most vicious of all dogs.

My neighbors as a teen has a blonde colored chow. The dog knew me well (I was at there house almost everyday) and never seemed to have a problem with me. One day, suddenly, she hated me... so much so that she attacked and took a huge chunkout of my right leg. It took 3 people to pull her off me. I still have a slight dent in my thigh and the area is numb completely. (it's been 10yrs since it happened) I've been terrified of large dogs ever since with the exception of golden labs.

Even after that, Pit bulls scare me more than chows. They seem to really have an easy attack trigger.

My father's German Shepard bit me. I whacked him in the snout with a shovel and he never bothered me again.

dogs that are kept chained up too much just tend to get really mean. Wouldn't you be a little POed if you were chained up most of the day to a tree? :)
