CDC's 10 Most Dangerous Dogs List

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Tuesday's fatal dog attack in Harnett County is not as rare as you may think. Dogs kill 10 to 20 people in the United States every year.

Last year in Orange County, 300 dog bites were reported, and 350 were reported in Raleigh.

While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:

Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

The breeds considered most likely to kill are pit bulls and rottweilers, and the CDC says that a chained dog is more likely to bite than an unchained dog.

The CDC also says the majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place, which is why choosing the right dog for your family is crucial.

I wonder if this is akin to the AMA concluding that people having guns are more likely to be attacked than those without, so the way to avoid being attacked is to not have a gun...

I can't speak for all JRT's, but Janey stopped chewing furniture after she was about 1 year old. (Bitter apple spray helped.) She housebroke easily, and almost never has accidents. The bit about the Napoleonic complex is true, but it applies mostly to other dogs - I socialized Janey from a young age, and today at 9 & 3/4 years old she's everybody's buddy. I take to work with me every day, and everyone loves her.

JRT's aren't for everybody - they love mischief, and require constant attention. But the rewards far exceed the investment.

Good and stoooopid is how I feel when I look at that list! Truthfully, I love animals very much, but this number being on hand is due to the fact that I love my wife way way way more. ;-)

I'm not surprised that Dobermans were on the list. I was attacked by one when I was 17..had to dive in front of a moving car to escape it. Laid still like I was dead, he went away. A neighbor with a shotgun heard about the incident, and encounted the bikers who lived in the house with the Doberman while toting said shotgun. Bikers (and dog) were gone 2 days later.

The next most vicious dog was, believe it or not, an Afghan. Had a bark like a hound of hell. Hated to take the trash out to the alley when that monster was in his yard. Tried to jump his fence several times to get at me. Didn't make for great relations with the next-door neighbors.

It's not because most dogs are mutts it's that most dogs that bite have negligent owners. Sad to say, many many mutt owners refuse to train restrain or take responsibility for their dogs. It's always worse when someone gets something for free.

We have some friends whose Airedale ate multiple floppy disks, several pairs of panty hose, and a whole bar of Irish Spring. Too many trips to the vet.

I've lost several pairs of shoes of lots of razors to my Airedales. That said, more than worth the inconvenience.

Would refer you to Jack, an Airedale who won the Victoria Cross posthumously for gallantry in WWI.

Saved a battalion from destruction by carrying a message through one-half mile of swamp. The artillery barrage that surrounded him broke his jaw and shattered his foreleg. But he persevered, delivered his message to headquarters and then fell dead. The battalion was relieved, and Jack was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for "Gallantry in the Field."

Thanks, Smokey's Mamma was dropped off here one night. She was expecting pups.

They were born on the coldest night of the year (It was 12 degrees and this is in NW Florida) She had them under a stack of lumber and there was no way of getting them out. After a couple of days I finally got them out and put them in the pump house.

They were 8 of the prettiest pups you could imagine. I put a sign up when they were old enough and had no problem at all giving them all away. Someone stole the mamma, maybe the same person who dropped her off. Anyway I have no idea exactly what he is. He obviously has a lot of Lab. A few days ago he surprised me by pointing at a bird so I guess he must have some bird dog in him.

By the way, is Wodehouse pronounced /Wood-house/ or /Woad-house/? I've heard both used, but someone told me Wodehouse himself pronounced it /Wood-house/.

It's /Wood-house/.

The first two seasons of the TV series are perfect - the second two are a bit inferior, because a different director took over and seemed to think he needed to add occasional elements of slapstick to the show - a decision which misses Wodehouse's point entirely. Seasons three and four are still worth getting, though, mostly because Fry and Laurie are so perfect in the roles.

Hmmm. Animals don't have rights because they're not human. Many do have responsibilities--mine does, and she fulfills them.

A human fetus doesn't have rights because courts haven't consistently offered them, but a newborn human baby has rights--but no responsibilities.

At least a newborn baby has rights at this moment, as I write this. There are people tirelessly working to change that.

Airedales are fantastic dogs, I'd still own one but there are some bad breeders out there that are hurting the breed.

We have a rottie. She's a big baby, and a gentle giant. She lives and loves to please. Now we also have mini schnauzers, and they live and love to BE pleased.
I agree with you, a well socialized dog makes a wonderful pet.
