CDC's 10 Most Dangerous Dogs List

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Tuesday's fatal dog attack in Harnett County is not as rare as you may think. Dogs kill 10 to 20 people in the United States every year.

Last year in Orange County, 300 dog bites were reported, and 350 were reported in Raleigh.

While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:

Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

The breeds considered most likely to kill are pit bulls and rottweilers, and the CDC says that a chained dog is more likely to bite than an unchained dog.

The CDC also says the majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place, which is why choosing the right dog for your family is crucial.

We make fun of our old girl, but no one and I mean no one messes with me or our daughter if that dog is around. And the puppy is learning fast.

The gentle dog is always shown on TV saving the family during a crisis.

As a stranger approaching a house, those would be the dogs I would fear the most.

What if the alpha is gone? My parents have a lab with ATTITUDE. She knows my dad is the alpha and wouldn't dare go against him, but last week, I was over and he wasn't home (Mom was). The big brat got it into her head to bare her teeth at me. I put her in her place. The next time she came over, she was still baring her teeth but crouched on the ground. I put her in her place, again. She finally behaved herself, but still... If the alpha's not around, then what?

I agree on the German Shepard.I have a 6 year old female I bought from a sheriff.She is the best dog and they are great with a family.

My Chow-Keeshound cross, Brunna, was my beloved companion for 10 years and died on Dec 13, 2001. My heart broke, but I was tremendously consoled by a wonderful tribute posted on FR by "Technochick 99"... "Welcome at Rainbow Bridge (a tribute to Brunna)". I saved it to my computer and re-read it from time, cherishing the thoughtfulness of all who participated in the thread.

Brunna was a wonderful dog - never hurt a soul - but most strangers were suitably scared when he bared a very fine set of teeth. My heart still grieves.

Didn't see any Black Labrador Retrievers on that list. Labs are the BEST!

We don't have a fenced yard, and a new neighbor, who has told us "She is afraid of dogs" is moving in....anyone have any suggestions?

Invest in the fence.

I have 2 standard wirehair dachshunds. I got them each at 8/9 weeks from a reputable breeder - they've never been mistreated. One HATES fences. She'll bark at anything on the other side of a fence and charge at the fence. Take a neighbor in their backyard(across the fence) and she's nonstop obnoxious. Have that neighbor walk out the side gate into the front yard and she'll meet him there to smother him with kisses. The Chain/Fence thing has to be something territorial...and it can't always be caused by abuse...

A fence sounds like a good place to start with your scaredy cat neighbor though. Good LUck!

It used to be that the vast majority of dogs were mutts. In my area of the country that is no longer true.

Like I said I haven't read the thread but I did look up the CDC report. Pitt Bulls are reported as "Pitt Bull types" which is code for mixed breed. (This is consistant with the results of local studies on dog bites in the Pittsburgh area) The CDC report conclusion is that. " Although fatal atacks on humans appear to be bred-specific other breeds may bite and cause fatalites at higher rates. Because of difficulties inherent in determining a dogs's breed with certainty, enforcement of breed-specific ordinances raises constitutional and practical issues."
IOW does nothing to address the actual issue of dangerous dogs.

One reason animals can't have rights is that they have no responsiblilties. An animal is not responsible for what it does, his owner is. Mutts or any kind of dog require responsible owners. These lists of "dangerous breeds" do nothing but offer the irresponsible an excuse for negligent behavior toward the responsibility that is dog ownership.
