CDC's 10 Most Dangerous Dogs List

POSTED: 3:58 PM EST January 14, 2004

Tuesday's fatal dog attack in Harnett County is not as rare as you may think. Dogs kill 10 to 20 people in the United States every year.

Last year in Orange County, 300 dog bites were reported, and 350 were reported in Raleigh.

While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:

Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

The breeds considered most likely to kill are pit bulls and rottweilers, and the CDC says that a chained dog is more likely to bite than an unchained dog.

The CDC also says the majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place, which is why choosing the right dog for your family is crucial.

We can only hope that our dogs will protect us when/if the time comes. The gentle dog is always shown on TV saving the family during a crisis.

I haven't read the thread but I suppose it will be a typical animal rights activists dream re breed banning. These lists are usually done by an animal rights groups like the Humane society of the United States. They generally leave the easily frightened to the conclusion that certain "breeds" are excessively dangerous. (breeds is in parentheses because" breed" is usually defined by the whim of the study authors)

What they don't say is that the vast majority of dogs that bite are mutts yet mutts are never listed as dangerous dogs.

"I don't think I've ever read of a St. Bernard attack."

I witnessed one........but not on a human being; on our chihuahua we had with us when my family stopped to visit at the home of some distant relative (on my mother's side..............figures). I'm a kid at the time, ya see, and we pull up to the house of these old folks. Have the chihuahua with us (we were in the process of a cross-country move, so had the dog along), and we get out of the car with me holding his leash. The visitees open the front door, and out bounds the BIGGEST St. Bernard you have EVER seen in your life (found out later that they fed him a whole chicken every day). Just HUGE. You could literally ride this guy using a saddle. He sees the chihuahua......looking like a tasty little morsel, I guess.......and just pounces. To his credit, Chico the chihuahua bared his fangs, snarled, and decided to give it a scrap.

So here I am holding onto the leash of a little chihuahua while the Largest Dog on the Planet decides to attack him. People screaming, arms waving, lots of "Stop! Stop!", yada yada. All I could think to do was yank that leash for all I was worth to extricate the chihuahua from the brouhaha.

It worked, thank God. Little sucker practically flew threw the air and I caught him; got him away from The Monster from Hell.

No harm done, but poor little dude was shaking for hours. Couldn't help but think what it would be like to have that bruiser attacking a person; ugly doesn't cover it.

Of course, there was always this St. Bernard:

Must be related to my Chow/Lab mix. I swear she could suck the filling out of a ding dong with those things. :-)

I have 3 Jack Russel Terriers sleeping in my big chair with me right now. The other one is sleeping in Mr. Ditters chair. 3 of our JR's have gone to Doggie Heaven. I doubt if we will ever have another breed of dog.

Is that because most dogs are mutts?

Why does that dog look yappy? :-)

Maybe it just killed a fox or a badger :-) They love to hunt and kill.

Aren't the vast majority of dogs mutts, though? One would expect the majority of bites to be mutt-bites. Perhaps those are not newsworthy, or perhaps (as is likely) pitt bulls really do more than their fair share of biting!

I don't know what it would prove to include mutts in the statistics.

"Indeed, sir." I love the "Jeeves and Wooster" TV series with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie just as much as the books. Wodehouse's work is a glimpse at some important elements of Western culture which have been almost forgotten in these times.

Those books are some of the zaniest farces ever written and a delight to read. A friend of mine recently lent me the first season of the TV series on DVD. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they captured Wodehouse's prose. Furthermore, they add context visually in a way that doesn't come through in the books.

By the way, is Wodehouse pronounced /Wood-house/ or /Woad-house/? I've heard both used, but someone told me Wodehouse himself pronounced it /Wood-house/.

Aaahhhh...

In that case, I have no idea (though it looks like it might have some spitz in it... is the tail curled somewhat?)

Unless you have owned Airedales you usually don't realize that all other breeds are inferior to these fine dogs.

Yours may be great, but careful with the glittering generalities. We have some friends whose Airedale ate multiple floppy disks, several pairs of panty hose, and a whole bar of Irish Spring. Too many trips to the vet.

My Grandpa's long term fiancee was a breeder for many years in Europe. They are sweet dogs.

"He drank up all the water
He ate up all the soap
And now he's sick in bed
With bubbles in his throat."

"Mama called the doctor
the doctor called the nurse
The nurse called the lady with the alligator purse..."

Sorry!

Any beast that would eat a whole bar of Salt Of A Pig is one tough animal!

My Daddy would never have any other dog than Mutts. He thought they were tougher and smarter.

He also would always pick the runt of the litter. Perhaps that dog is the least aggressive, I don't really know why, but he did have some really, really great dogs.
