CDC's 10 Most Dangerous Dogs List

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Tuesday's fatal dog attack in Harnett County is not as rare as you may think. Dogs kill 10 to 20 people in the United States every year.

Last year in Orange County, 300 dog bites were reported, and 350 were reported in Raleigh.

While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:

Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

The breeds considered most likely to kill are pit bulls and rottweilers, and the CDC says that a chained dog is more likely to bite than an unchained dog.

The CDC also says the majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place, which is why choosing the right dog for your family is crucial.

There is no such thing as a bad dog, only some dogs like the taste of people.

My daughter received a Jack Russell Terrier as a gift. We have always owned dogs and she has helped to housebreak a few. This one is 10 months old and completely psycho. I bought her "Jack Russell Terriers for Dummies." some of the comments from a lover of the breed:

"Jack Russell Terriers like to taste furniture. It is not a puppy/teething issue- it is life long behavior."

"All Jack Russell Terriers have a Napoleon complex. They do not recognise that they are small dogs and will not back down from conflict with larger dogs. The stories of JRT's killed by a fight-they picked- with Rotti's are not unusual."

"JRT's have their own agenda when it comes to house breaking, some are never successfully trained."

This one actually pooped on my husband's pillow. My next door neighbor, Ma Baxter, has two Rotti's chained in her yard, I wonder...

Sadly mine got IMHA and died at 3 yrs. old.

We got a 'replacement' recently. Possibly a cockapoo. Looks more poo than cocka though.
It's a cute lovable dog but I'm always thinking, "She ain't Border Collie smart by a loooong shot"

Ours adored kids( except if on a bicycle), but was wary of some men. She was an excellent judge of character. The men she didn't like were the same ones I didn't either.
They are NOT house dogs.

Bluebelle is a very dominant dog. She's about the bossiest dog I ever met - with other dogs. It's all bluff, though. She's really just a big baby!

I think I met your dearly departed shep last night. I took my pups to the vet and a mountain man walked in with a dog that looked like a cross between a German Shep and a grizzly bear.

I was raised with Sheps and I have never seen one this size before. The dog had to weigh 150-160 lbs. It's head was huge. It looked like the "big bad wolf" of the fairly tales.

Some lady had a squirmy toddler in there. Kid stayed on her lap for a good part of the wait but the kid ringtailed till gmom put it down. The kid was parading in front of this critter. I thought "There's lunch"

Border Collie. Smartest dog I ever had.

Yep, my old Border Collie would pee on command, very handy on rainy nights.
I loved that dog, she was 15 and I had to put her down a year ago, I still miss her.

Now we have a Norfolk Terrier mix, weighs 10 lbs.

This looks like a dog that will spend the day cleaning the house, then meet you at the door with your slippers, robe, AND favorite drink, perfectly made. Dinner will be in the oven, the checkbook will be balanced, and he'll tell you he saved $70 this week alone by clipping coupons.

Besides, go to your local pound and pick one you fall in love with at first sight. I can guarantee you'll never be sorry.

We had a border collie for 12 years. She did fine in the house, although she herded anything that moved. Loved it when the kids played soccer - she tried to herd the ball. The one time we tried to have her bred, she refused - there were cows nearby, and she was more interested in working them.

If someone wants to own a border collie, they need to understand that intensity. Wonderful dogs...if the AKC doesn't ruin them!

Most docile dog I've ever known is my sister's 5-pound Yorkshire Terrior. She has always been well treated but still adopts a posture of extreme passivity when someone reaches down to pick her up. In meeting dogs, she will not approach a large or medium-sized dog; for those near her size she occasionally summons the nerve for a nose-to-nose greeting, but she's liable to get spooked in the middle of it and leap into a 360-degree turn. She obviously knows she is small. But withal, she is an intelligent and affectionate little dog.

We have a mutt-dog now that won't accept other dogs. We've tried, but she can't settle the dominance issue. She's the kids' dog, and they all love each other completely. I like her okay, but she's got rocks for brains. I wanted a border collie.

She'll be around for awhile yet, of course, but I get to choose the next dog....
