CDC's 10 Most Dangerous Dogs List

POSTED: 3:58 PM EST January 14, 2004

Tuesday's fatal dog attack in Harnett County is not as rare as you may think. Dogs kill 10 to 20 people in the United States every year.

Last year in Orange County, 300 dog bites were reported, and 350 were reported in Raleigh.

While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:

Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

The breeds considered most likely to kill are pit bulls and rottweilers, and the CDC says that a chained dog is more likely to bite than an unchained dog.

The CDC also says the majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place, which is why choosing the right dog for your family is crucial.

The breeder that I stud my dog with also raises Am Staffs. Good dogs, much more stable than Pits, they do about one litter a year for show, and they get lots of dough for them. They get a bad rap because they look like Pits, but they have a better brain, perhaps because they are professionally bred.

I have a Sheltie that is the cutest, nicest dog. He only weighs a little more than 20 pounds, but he is not a sissy dog, like some people think. We take him backpacking and he can walk for miles, just trotting along. And we take him to the dog park and he goes into the big dog section, even though he's small. Shelties are very smart, too.

He doesn't like water, though, and won't go swimming at our dog beach. Also, he barks at every little noise. But he is so sweet.

My APBT is a wonderful watch dog as well. She would even watch as someone came into our house and took all of our belongings. She has never met a stranger and we have a big problem with her jumping into cars of visitors because she wants to ride. She will just jump in when the car door is open and sit in the seat with a big goofy "I am ready. Let's go" look on her face. The only time she barks is when she and her own shadow are playing. She's not animal aggressive, at least not yet. She absolutely loves the springpole. There is a wonderful forum for us APBT owners. It is called Pit Bull Pets. If you would be interested in the link let me know. Those folks have some absolutely amazingly beautiful pits and it's nice to have a place to go to "socialize" with people who aren't ignorant of the breed and who don't fall for every stereotype out there.

Two reasons, 1) fight or flight. If a dog can't run away and it feels threatened it has to fight. More dogs bite out of fear than any other reason. A timid dog is more likely to bite than a self assured dog.

2)A dog lunging and being held back gets worked up into a frenzy. People that fight dogs and people that train police dogs will hold them back with the lead untill they are really worked up. When either someone comes into range or they are let off the lead they chow down.

The only St. Bernard I have ever known lived across the street from us. He was a monster & had to be destroyed before he killed someone. A real life Cujo.

I have a friend with a bumper sticker that says "My border collie is smarter than your honor student". She gets mixed reactions.

Well, dogs are dumped. I had a dachshund dumped in my backyard last August. He is a sweetie. He is estimated to be 13 years old. He has had to have dental and ear surgery. He has cancer. Today he is loved and will never be abandoned again.

Weimaraner's are great, especially with kids. My sister has one and she and my 6 year old niece are best friends. They play and run all day long.

It'll be impossible to find another one like it, then. Rats

No offense, but I'm hoping you're wrong, and someone will come up with a breed name after all! :-)

My last Airedale (see above)had massive epilepsy attacks that killed him, it was tough. I love the breed but downsized with the Irish. The Irish is a much tougher dog to own, smarter, but they have a temper towards other dogs, I have been doing lots of training to mellow him out. But once a terrier owner, always a terrier owner!

Why does that dog look yappy? :-)

I think if Geezer is right and it's mixed breed, it has some of that in it.

That's funny.

Our puppy is lab/chow mix and our old girl (she's almost 12) is black lab and Chesapeake Bay retriever ----and dumber than a box of rocks. My husband has been saying for years the state should be subsidizing us for keeping her!!!!

"Never, never trust a chow."

I had a Chow-Keeshound [sp?] mix. Sweetest dog I have ever seen.

BUT, he looked viscious and had shoulders that made it look like he could pull a 22-car railroad hookup. Barked like a pro wrestler and all-in-all, made a great pal.

Teddy passed on in 2000 at 17.

I've seen a baby pull himself upright with the ears of a cocker spaniel. Dog never flinched.

Wodehouse fan, Jeeves?
