Call the WHite HOuse to Thank Bush for CFR!!!
Posted on 12/10/2003 1:09:18 PM PST by Maceman
For what good it will do, I just called the White House switchboard (202-456-1111) and conveyed my extreme outrage at Bush for not vetoing CFR when he had the chance.
I hope you all will do the same.
BTW, the operator told me "you are not alone."
Let's shut down the WH switchboard with howls of protest.
If I wasn't still even more terrified of the Democrats than I am of the Republicans (albeit barely at this point), I would never support Bush in '04 after this.

No, sinkspur, he does not.
And I just looked at his sign-in date: 12-07-03 --- imagine that. A DU troll?

You don't think Frist and McConnell are steaming mad about this decision? Bush said back when he signed it that he strongly objected to the free speech part of the Bill and was convinced the Supreme Court would reverse it. So I'm sure Bush is not happy about this and I would bet that McConnell has already spoke with Frist and Bush about their next plan. I blame the the SCOTUS for not defending the 1st ammendment, almost everyone thought parts of this bill would be struck down, I was one of them. I'm not happy about today's decision, but I'm not gonna sit out the election or go vote for Dean over it. We lost this one, but it's hardly over

You are correct, Onyx. Throughout the 2000 campaign, then-Gov. Bush consistently said he would sign a CFR bill. Although, in my opinion, he should have vetoed the bill, the fact is that by signing it he fulfilled a campaign promise. The man keeps his word.

Well I'm not going to sit the election out either. What an absolutely stupid way to protest. But even if Frist and McConnell bring this back to the table, I just don't see Congress doing anything about it. You'll have the Dems saying the SCOTUS thought it was ok,- joined of course by the RINOS, and the Republicans won't have any majority to amend the bill. It may get done in the House, but the Senate is a wash.

Very true, I do understand why McConnell and Bush thought the free speech portion of the bill would be struck down when challenged in the Supreme Court. I believe they gambled on the SCOTUS doing the right thing and lost.
I would have never guessed the supreme court would uphold the free speech limitation poertion of the CFR Bill and I'm sure every Constitutiona scholar is as suprized as I am.

They can attach the change in the law to another bill that is popular and not worth killing the whole bill over it. It's done all the time. Daschle did it with forestry regulations in South Dakota. he attached the change in the laws to the Defense Bill

The political calculus is that he can do more good by signing CFR and remaining in office than vetoing it and letting Dean sign it in '05. That's nuts. I don't know people whose vote was hanging on whose party was in favor of "taking the money out of politics" -- how many people would vote for a Demo over a President who deserved re-election based on CFR alone?
If your hypothesis is correct, Bush is counting on the inability of the national media to launch a squelch-proof late-in-the-game offensive that his campaign -- in normal circumstances -- would have had to spend megamillions to address.
Now, post-CFR, it is possible that the media that will inevitably slime Bush may make the difference between victory and defeat -- and there's nothing that he could do about it, because he has cut off his own access to the airwaves.

What he said in 2002 is that he would veto the bill if it didn't have severability, and in 2000 he said he would sign a campaign finance reform bill if it was to his liking. In 2000 there was nothing on the table for him to look at

Why would anyone think that the liberal SCOTUS would veto this bill? If Bush thought this would happen, he's even stupider than I thought. (And I think he's pretty stupid. BTW, has anyone seen the latest research on long term effects of pot and cocaine? Maybe that's why Bush thought the SCOTUS would veto this bill)
Although Bush might be stupid enough to believe this, his handlers are extremely smart. No, Bush and his inner circle knew all along that this bill would stand. After all, it makes incumbency so much more powerful and now that Bush is an incumbent, why should he care about free speech?
Bush's tap-dancing around this issue while well-meaning freepers fall all over each other defending the bum is quite similar to the Iraq debacle. While Bush waves the flag and talks tough, his buddies are cleaning up with their new rebuilding contracts in Iraq. And almost daily Bush gives some speech about how he wants the UN in Iraq and that he was really enforcing the UN's resolutions in Iraq. Since Iraq had no WMD's and had nothing to do with 9/11, I tend to believe Bush now rather than a few months ago when he was pretending to dis the UN.
No, I would say Bush is pretty smart. A masterful politician.
