Has there been a case where a Republican was expected to win the presidency, and the nation was surprised/flabbergasted by the election of the Democrat candidate? I am hearing lots of liberals express genuine fear/anxiety about the upcoming election (in contrast to 2016 where they assumed victory). I see the liberal fear and anxiety as a good thing, as it indicates they know (whether consciously or unconsciously) they are greatly outnumbered.
Of course I plan to vote, on November 3rd, in person. Just wondering how the current 'feeling' in America relates to previous examples.
That wasn’t the question posed, it was has a Republican who was expected to win ever been upset. So even though he was an incumbent he was still expected to win, and by a landslide I might add, but he was upset by Truman who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
His second blunder was showing complete amazement of the checkout process at a store, signaling to people that he was out-of-touch with what real Americans experiences were on a daily basis.
Bush didn’t have Lee Atwater to run his 92 campaign, he would have actually took on Clinton. But Bush has no one really to blame but himself still. He broke the tax pledge, he went against the NRA and gun owners and he governed like a liberal. Justice Thomas was his only contribution to conservatism and the country.
Andrew Johnson was not a Republican. He was a Democrat on a fusion ticket with Republican Lincoln.
Ford 1976; he said that the appointment of John Paul Stevens was his greatest accomplishment in life.
but here’s where it gets complicated....if Perot hadn’t run, someone else would have.
Remember Buchanan in the NH primary? He won like 20% or something. Bush was fatally wounded there. The GOP really didn’t want him. And the D’s hated his guts, and Clinton was a “new democrat” (he wasn’t of course, but he was very wily).
So yes in the final analysis, and in retrospect, it is true that Perot elected Clinton. But had it not been for Perot, someone else would have run and done the same.
I would still (respectfully :)) maintain that Bush had no chance against Clinton. He was a pure one-termer.....
I remember how Bob Dornan hosted Rush once and for three hours he just blasted Bush for all the things he did wrong. Someone like Bush just won’t recover from that.
(He did of course give us the amazing and awesome Clarence Thomas, and for that we are grateful. For Souter, not so much).
And Lyndon Johnson stole Texas for Kennedy.
May have been, but after the no new taxes, it was an easy sell and had an impact just the same.
Lets be more honest. H Ross Perot was the spoiler. And everyone who voted for Perot helped Clinton win.
In one of the debates, Bush checked his watch, which the press took to mean he was disengaged. Biden did the same in the final debate.
It wasn't a presumption. The Illinois Democrats supposedly manufactured enough votes to put Kennedy over thetop.
ML/NJ
But lets be honest: 41 didnt have a chance against Clinton
If memory serves Ross Perot had a lot to do with that victory as he split the vote.

Plus 41’s lying “Read my lips...”
I totally agree. Clinton was not a very strong candidate. He had to drag Hillary onto 60 Minutes, even back then in the tank for Democrats, to apologize for another of his zippergates just to finish second in New Hampshire. If Ross Perot had not been the spoiler, Bush probably wins despite his screwups on domestic policy.
Dewey, Truman, Germans?
Forget it. He's rolling!
GHW lost because of Ross Perot who siphoned off 20% of the vote in some states, consisting Bush electoral votes.
Perhaps you can shed some light on the debate(s)."
History shows Nixon won the first of four debates on substance but obviously lost on optics over the clamy appearance. Hindsight is always interesting, Kennedy and his policies would be considered conservative in this day and age.
