Yes, the Bushes are really swamp creatures through and through. I am sorry to say that. And I too did believe at the time that freedom lives in every heart but I dont really believe that anymore. Not as any kind of political reality.

I blow most of what used to be my reading time online now, so I tend to seek out unabridged audiobooks.

The first line asks
"Has there been a case where a Republican was expected to win the presidency, and the nation was surprised/flabbergasted by the election of the Democrat candidate"
The answer is Dewey.
The Dewey thing is not relevant because the way they did polling back then was terrible, far worse than today.

Dewey is relevant because both the media and the polls had him far ahead and said he'd win easily, just like they are doing with Biden. In fact the media were so sure Dewey would win, they even printed the next day front page headlines that Dewey had won, even before votes were counted.
However, Truman never paid any attention to none of that malarkey and went out there and worked his butt off with campaign rallies all over the country, just like Trump is doing now.
In the end, Dewey won, just like Trump will win.
As for the polls being better now than in 1948...you are kidding right? Where were you in 2016?
