I would like to take this opportunity to stray from the normal topic of our Thread Intro and do something special this weekend.
I would like to dedicate and name this thread "America The Right Way Thanks Jim Robinson"
How strange! I checked again cause "power lines" sounds like TLC, but no, it's the History Channel. Installing, operating power lines, and the dangerous work of the linemen. It's called "Hands on History." Definitely a guy-pleaser!
Time to read and get sleepy. Nita, great opening today. I'm so glad we have ATRW!
Someone in our Wodehouse newsgroup said that they thought George would be the best bet because there seem to be so many George's in the Wodehouse menagerie, but George is my dad's name so not sure I want that confusion. I think I'd feel kind of guilty creating a name. I'll think of an alternative nickname for you.
By the way, Wodehouse has fun ways of referring to many rather anonymous characters in his stories. Many of the stories start out in a club or in a bar. Usually there's a bit of discussion among those present, then someone begins to relate a story that is relevant to the discussion. Usually these other people are referred to by what they are eating or drinking. In the Mr. Mulliner stories, there is often a "hot scotch and soda." For instance, the story might say, "Modern girls, it seems to me," interjected a hot scotch and soda, "are far more serious than they were in my day." Other stories have "beans," "eggs," and "crumpets."
On another note, two days ago we got a box of books that we sent to ourselves from Singapore and today another one came with videos and stuffed animals. The first box had the September 12 and September 13 editions of one of the big Singapore papers. It's been interesting to go back over the news coverage. The September 12 issue had that picture of someone jumping and falling from the WTC, just a close up of the person with his head down in a free fall. Considering how much those events have changed our world -- including Singaporeans' world -- the coverage seems pretty small. But I guess they were really scrambling for news. Plus, that is not the Straits Times, but more of the tabloid paper which I think I only bought on two occasions before or after that.

We had a good talk. I found out that my dad has more problems with the cancer than I previously knew. I hope that he doesn't suffer too much on his way off this mortal coil. I will spend at least a day with him next week, before I head off to Korea.

And years later, after I was married, the house next door to us burned. I was nearly in hysterics and the owners stood there calmly watching the whole thing ...... but I think they were just grateful that no one was injured. Their daughter had recently had surgery for scoliosis and was in a full body cast .... her father was able to get her out of the house safely as well as her little brother ..... and at that point, they felt that that was the most important thing.
We had another friend lose her house to fire ..... and she told me it was so frustrating. All of a sudden they had nothing but the clothes on their backs ...... no toothbrush, no comb, no lipstick, no change of underwear ..... nothing! She said it really makes you appreciate even the smallest things.
May God be with you! And let us know if there is anything we can do for you!
Son is terrible at giving directions (heaven only knows how he ever finds his way around. The directions he sent us said to make a left turn where we should have made a right turn ..... and then hubby got very grumpy too. We had to stop and call for directions .... and, thankfully, d-i-l answered the phone and got us straightened out. We were all in very foul moods by the time we got to son's house.
But things improved considerably once we arrived. Son's new house is really lovely ..... and to really cap things off, he said that he got a very nice raise on Friday, which will help considerably with making the new house payment they have taken on ...... :-)
illstillbe ~~~ Apparently the landscaping was done professionally ..... d-i-l said the previous owners left her all kinds of info about the trees and plants ..... warranties on some of them even! They have a lot of variety ...... a Bradford pear, a peach tree (with ripening fruit), hibiscus, a weeping cherry, "butterfly plants", crepe myrtle, and lots of plants that I didn't even know the names of. The house is only 2 years old so all the plants are quite young yet. And there is a wonderful "shadow box" fence around a portion of the back yard ..... done in cedar ..... it's really beautiful!
The kids just love their aunt and uncle so they calmed right on down and were little angels the rest of the day. D-i-l told us of a better way to leave town that was much quicker and easier. We have noted the exit number and directions for next time.
As we got back into Gastonia, we saw evidence of stormy weather ..... lots of debris, especially around storm drains ..... small limbs in yards ...... the streets still damp. But, alas, we got home to discover that we had less than a tenth of an inch at our house ...... barely enough to wet the grass. Even that much is a blessing though ...... we'll take any amount of rain we can get.
Btw, Molly and ohioWfan, I'm probably the worst singer in the whole world .... son asks me if I hear the songs right in my head and the sounds just won't come out right or what ...... my own kids would promise to be good if I wouldn't sing to them ...... but the grandkids won't go to sleep at night when they are here or I am there unless I sing to them. Rock a Bye Baby, Tura Lura Lura [Irish Lullaby] (?), On Top of Spaghetti, The Itsy Bitsy Spider, How Much Is That Doggie in the Window, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Jesus Loves Me ..... I have quite a repertoire .... and if I can't remember the words, I just make some up ...... *grins*

The house next door to us burned about 10 years ago. The owner had had a new furnace installed and it malfunctioned. Also, the owner was a shooting enthusiast who loaded his own shells, and there was gunpoweder on the premises, as well as live ammunition.
It was truly frightening, plus our volunteer fire department was slow to get here. My husband was spraying the home with our garden hose when they showed up, and in fact his action saved their dining room from total devastation, preserving their china and Hummel collection. However, the entire upper story burned, we had to wet down our roof, and the electrical lines caught fire, causing us to lose power.
I wil never forget how awful that was, and how frightening the power of fire is. Thank goodness Raven and his wife are ok. They will be in my prayers today.
