Two-thirds of Americans believe the war in Iran has not been worth fighting.
A new AP-NORC poll found that roughly two-thirds of U.S. adults say the war that began Feb. 28 is not worthwhile. The sentiment is shared by the vast majority of Democrats (87%) and independents (68%), as well as 37% of Republicans.
The AP-NORC poll, conducted July 23-27, surveyed 1,165 adults and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

Regardless of what happened in 1906, Iran had a democratically elected government in 1953. Great Britain was concerned they would lose influence if the new government nationalized the oil fields, and got the US to help instigate a coup to remove the government.
Trump inherited this mess. Kudos to him for wanting to fix it, but either he is receiving some bad, even dishonest, advise, or he has an ace up his sleave. I hope it's the latter, for our sake as well as Iran's.
I tend to lean towards the second theory, because Israeli intelligence is pretty hard core and will do very ugly unpleasant things if they see them as necessary for the benefit of Israel.
I honestly can't believe you have the nerve and the moral compass to post something like this on Free Republic while maintaining your own position -- extensively documented here on this website -- on the U.S. role in the conflict between Iran and its neighbors in the Middle East.
If this is what you really believe the Israeli government is willing to do to its own citizens to advance their geopolitical agenda, then what the hell do you think they'd be willing to do to AMERICANS?
I now see your position on the U.S.-Iran conflict in the proper perspective -- and I can say with absolute certainty that you, sir, are out of your f#&%ing mind and don't even belong on the same planet as me (or anyone else who considers himself a patriotic American).
Frankly, if Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin who facilitated the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus Christ for His "crime" of blasphemy could come back to life here in 2026 and post on this website, I think their political and moral perspective on the world would be no different than yours.
I think it's high time for you to find somewhere else to post your diabolical sh!t.
IMHO, it is best to view this Iranian conflict as a massive training exercise... The Pentagon’s dream...
We already know the pathetic state of Russia’s military condition from their Ukrainian exercise...
Now China realizes that they have a way to go before being able to match American power... China now understands that 25 of its dams are totally susceptible to deliverable American weapons...
Whereas American planners now know what works and what doesn’t work...
A hugely successful training exercise indeed...
"Suspect" doesn't mean the same thing as "believe."
But beyond that, your point makes no sense. The Iranian Mullahs are a threat to us *AND* Israel. *WE* have to take them out because they are a threat to *US*. That it benefits Israel is immaterial to our own need.
I now see your position on the U.S.-Iran conflict in the proper perspective -- and I can say with absolute certainty that you, sir, are out of your f#&%ing mind and don't even belong on the same planet as me (or anyone else who considers himself a patriotic American).
Well whatever it is you see, it is entirely a fabrication of your own mind, much like your position on the issue of Islamic Religious Fanatics with nukes.
This, when taken with the prospect of atomic weapons in the hands of a horde of zealots with visions of a returning "Hidden Imam" who will eventually appear and mete out justice to nonbelievers, is intolerable.
There are so many ignorant jackasses on this forum who do not grasp these simple facts. They just keep prattling on with their ignorant mouths.
Great Britain is a bad ally. They got us involved in WWI which led to WWII and with the end of the Cold War and the emergence of the EU as the supranational government.
It is par for the course that they got us into Iran way back in 1953.
Finally President Trump has the appropriate relationship with Great Britain and we used to be that way before WWI.
We can trade with them but we shouldn't trust them on anything and of course we shouldn't try to overthrow governments throughout the world.
OK, fine.
You "suspect" this scenario, but you're perfectly comfortable having leaders of that government meeting with the U.S. President and his cabinet in the White House Situation Room.
Like I said ... You, sir, are out of your freaking mind. I don't even want to hear about "Islamic religious fanatics with nukes." I am 100% certain that the biggest threat to this planet is the AMERICAN religious fanatics with nukes.
Trump has turned out to be a far better president than I ever thought he would be. He has been right on so many issues, why shouldn't I trust him on this?
I am 100% certain that the biggest threat to this planet is the AMERICAN religious fanatics with nukes.
You've become a bit unhinged. Drink some wine or something.
Or maybe stop?
The only successful and beneficial action by the CIA of which I am aware, is bolstering the Shah of Iran in 1953. Other than that, the CIA pretty much screws up everything they touch.
And we didn't "overthrow" that government. We prevented the overthrow of that government. The Shah was in power legitimately.
Thank you for the explanation.
If the government is a legitimate threat then I don't agree. Overthrowing the Nazis, for example was fully justified. Overthrowing a democratically elected government in 1953 because they won't do our bidding? No.
There's a gray area in between, as to what constitutes a threat to us and who decides if they are a threat. I think we're seeing that in this debate.
Sorry but AP is provably heavily biased - against Trump. The NORC, of Chicago, hollers 'bi-partisan' a lot... are they? 🤔
Because he's not infallible, and he does have a track record of letting himself get led astray by duplicitous @ssholes.

And lest anyone think Trump was entirely innocent in that debacle, remember that he was still running around on the campaign trail in 2024 bragging about "Operation Warp Speed" ... until someone on his campaign staff with half a brain pointed out to him that this kind of nonsense would always attract a chorus of boos from his own supporters at his own political rallies.
Maggie Haberman of the New York Times - received awards for promoting the Russia hoax... never retracted or apology given. Maggie Haberman with her off shore bank accounts and continuous burner phone networks... All of this passes as modern 'journalism'! ❗ 🚽🚽🚽
Here you are correct. Trump is not infallible. "Operation Warp Speed" turned out to be a disaster, but I very greatly doubt anyone could have done any better, what with all the "experts" giving worthless advice.
So Trump did make that "mistake", though he would have to have second sight to see that coming.
But other than that, he's pretty damn good. His instincts are almost always right. He's the best at this job that i've ever seen, or even read about in history.
His track record is good enough for me to give him the benefit of the doubt. He almost always wins.
I've heard that claim for several years now. Last week there was a Freeper posting quite explicit details about what actually happened. I don't recall his name, but I could probably find him in my posting history if I looked.
But the point is, he says Mosaddegh was attempting to overthrow the government, and we helped stop him. The Shah was the legitimate ruler of Iran, and Mosaddegh was attempting extra legal means to gain power.
So I think people have been spinning the truth and spreading the incorrect version of events.
The shah was the head of government Iran, not Mosaddegh. Mosaddegh sax appointed by the shah, not elected as prime minister. Pahlavi had the constitutional authority to dismiss Mosaddegh, and he was violating the Iranian constitution by going outside his authority.
It was not a coup. These are facts.
Good advice, but when you have no other option, you have to do what you have to do.
There was a time when I considered the possibility that Trump was the Anti-Christ, because it said in Revelations that the whole world would "wonder" after the beast, and Trump has indeed produced "wonder" all over the world regarding himself, but his fallibility with the Covid crises convinces me he is not.
He's just a very clever fellow who is usually right.
