Four teenagers were killed when a car hit a parked train during a brief police chase after fleeing a traffic stop on Chicago's Southwest Side early Sunday morning.
Chicago police said it began when officers in the city's 22nd District, which includes Morgan Park, Beverly, and Mount Greenwood communities, saying someone pointed a gun at them while they were driving

Looking at the photos it shows cones on a very slightly raised median transitioning from a point to a wide region between the bridges.
There is a guardrail for the last half but still not a very safe situation.
There were two flimsy barricades at the edge but that is too late for a car to see at night. One barricade was over the edge so at night an open path existed.
Ah, Amish kids.
There is an asphalt median up to the edge of the bridge with no terminal barrier if you back up the image.

case B - barrier would not have stopped car - car would still go flying

If a dirt mound is not feasible, crash barrels full of sand could be used.
This specific location may not require a crash barrier because it's a railway underneath, not a roadway or a walkway.
I couldn't find a picture online of twin spans with dirt mounds between them on both ends but I included a link to two spans on I-79 in Pennsylvania north of I-80 that has dirt mounds. If you go down to street view, you can see the overgrown mounds that would stop a vehicle from dropping onto the roadway below. They don't look like much but they work.
Granted, this pickup truck at high speed may not have been stopped but then again, the mounds are designed to stop a tractor-trailer, so the driver of this pickup might have buried the front bumper into the dirt. The difference in impact may have been significant since it would not include the drop and would allow the front crumple zone to absorb some of the impact as well as better align the airbags with the point of impact.

There’s always road construction here. There are perpetually signs and construction horses everywhere, so there really is no excuse beyond negligent driving or being impaired.

We know they can swim, but have issues with driving unless their drunk. They obviously don’t know how to fly unless it’s a planeload of dope.

Or at least the driver is. I recall being a 14 year old who started crying because the drunk 18 year old driver was speeding crazily as we drove back from a bar trip to NY back when their alcohol consumption age was 18.
The other three guys in the car insisted he slow down because I was crying. Then he had to pull over and the the least impaired took the wheel. Those 3 were so thankful they had an excuse.
Excellent observation. I suspect the contractor is going to be facing at least 4 lawsuits for gross negligence, then 4 more for wrongful death, etc. I can’t believe that area wouldn’t have been blocked under any circumstances, assuming that was the spot in particular that the vehicle exited the roadway.

You’re partially right, Leroy Brown. But in reality Englewood on the South Side, and Austin on the West Side are far more dangerous than Beverly or Mt Greenwood. In fact, lots of CPD and CFD reside in the Mt Greenwood neighborhood.
