News Analysis: Trump, long a critic of 'forever wars,' may be stumbling into one with Iran

BEIRUT — President Trump long railed against forever wars.

For years, whether as president or candidate, he flayed electoral opponents and previous presidents with his signature barbs, calling their entanglements a “complete waste of time” (Afghanistan), “the worst single mistake ever made in the history of our country” (Iraq) and “stupid” (Ukraine).

Yet he now appears to be stumbling into a forever war of his own.

From the first days of the U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran, Trump and his officials insisted their adventure abroad would be the exception, that the conflict would end in a matter of weeks.

Now, 4½ months later, after a torturous, start-stop vacillation between truce and war, the U.S. is pressing on with a fight that has no end in sight — or even a clear definition of what an acceptable end would be.

In the last week, the ceasefire collapsed, with the U.S. and Iran trading daily waves of strikes, leading to the deaths of two American servicemen on Friday when Iranian ballistic missiles struck Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, where U.S. assets and personnel are stationed.

On Sunday, as the U.S. and Iran launched more air assaults, the U.S. announced that a service member was killed Saturday in Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone.

The deaths in Jordan were the first combat fatalities since the U.S...

The end desired is the overthrow of the regime by the people of Iran. If it had been merely to crush Iran , power plants and infrastructure would be smoldering ruins right now.

Strange how history repeats itself. The civilized world fought the demons before in the Christian Crusades but didn’t finish the job and now the task is even more overwhelming because they have returned and proliferated all over the world. What does that mean on the scale of evil versus good?

We’ve been at war with Iran forever. This is the first time we fought back.

War with Islam is a long term war.

Is anyone on this website gullible enough to believe some of the nonsense they post?

It started out fine then it started dragging out into what could be another forever war. However this one involves Trump so all bets are off. He intentionally makes himself less predictable.

I don’t care who’s saying it, its kind of obvious that’s exactly what’s happening.

This war is becoming an unmitigated disaster. It’s the most unpopular war since polling began. Iran will wind up controlling the Persian Gulf and there’s nothing we can do about it. Even worse will be the loss of the petrodollar. Our bases in the region have been destroyed and it’s unlikely most of them will be rebuilt. Sending in ground troops will be catastrophic but Trump will do it anyway because his ego won’t accept losing but we are gonna lose anyway. It will be a major embarrassment for the US. Trump is making Jimmy Carter look like a geopolitical master. Inflation will kick in around the time of the midterms and the Dems will sweep the elections maybe even take the Senate. Best prepare yourself because everything is about crumble beyond what anyone suspects.

47 years and we’re finally taking some action to end this forever war. Kill ‘em all.

Oh no! We’ve been fighting and treating with Iran for almost four months!

“Forever war” says the LA Times. They must love and support our country and the President to offer such strategic military advice. All leftist/communist media is lining up to offer guidance to President Trump.

What Patriots they must be? They must love the United States! And President Trump.

/sarcasm off

Not to mention Iran’s military has been “obliterated” several times now and they’re still fighting. Whoever is running foreign policy in the White House House should resign.

I’m inclined to lean towards Victor Davis Hanson’s analysis of what’s going on as opposed to the LA Times. As brilliant as the writers at the LA Times are

The Left only hopes. In fact, many are openly rooting for the IRGC.

Strange how history repeats itself.

Sadly, yes

In 2002 - 2004, Republicans won all three branches, the Dems were on the ropes and there was talk about a permanent Republican Majority. Then Israel insisted that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction and we have to go to war, which Bush did. Because of this in 2006 and 2008 the Dems got new life and came roaring back from the dead and won big majorities.

In 2024, Republicans won all three branches, the Dems were on the ropes and there was talk about a permanent Republican Majority, especially with the 2030 Census and Blue State Exodus. Then Israel insisted that Iran is weeks away from having a nuclear weapons and we have go to war for them, which Trump did. Because of this in 2026 the Dems got new life and.......

Minimum objective: no nukes.

Ideal objective: limit Iran's force projection into Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon, Nigeria.

Hopefully, we can achieve the minimal objective without resorting to draconian measures.

If necessary, we can achieve the minimum objective even without a negotiated peace, but this will be extremely ugly and take some time.

Ever notice how the MSM was slobbering all over the Ukraine war, 100% lockstep, foaming at the mouth with every escalation of this war, how after 4.5 years all we hear is victory stories even though the Russians have attained both their military and political objectives?

Is the MSM really under the belief that Iran who has been killing our people since 1979 (hostages), 1983 Marine Corps barracks bombing in Beirut, providing intel and material assistance to insurgents and militias in Iraq killing our forces, backing the Houti’s, Nigerian militias, Hezbollah in Lebanon is better than Russia?

Why this difference in reporting?

Why is our media far more critical compared to Ukraine in how the war is executed, if we are achieving our goals, the collateral damage, why is suddenly every casualty or loss on our side highlighted, suddenly 5 months for Iran in an air campaign is a forever war, but 4.5 YEARS in a ground war costing tens of thousands of lives often per month didn't matter?

Could it be, that it makes a difference that a Republican, and an unapologetic conservative, a white male macho / leader type that isn't gay, is in office today?
