Mayor Zohran Mamdani boasted Thursday that the Big Apple will hold a lottery for 1,000 discounted FIFA World Cup tickets for lucky winners – after the city kicked-in $90 million for the tournament.
The tickets will be $50 for those lucky enough to win the pitch, coming with free round-trip bus rides to the matches in New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, Mamdani announced during an event in Harlem.
The soccer-loving socialist made a show of contending no taxpayer money directly went toward the low-cost tickets – an assertion that quickly had insiders crying foul.
“FIFA will be raking in billions with this World Cup, thanks in part to the largesse of New York City taxpayers, and in return they give us a measly 1,000 low-cost tickets?” said David Carr (R-Staten Island), the minority leader for the City Council.
“I think the Mayor shanked that one.”
Everything about the World Cup has come with a hefty price tag for the trifecta of New York City, New York and New Jersey that’s hosting the soccer spectacle.

I’ve been saying for the last year or so, this WC is gonna be a $h!t$h0w. It gets worse every week that this goes on. I really think the USA is gonna be embarrassed about the whole thing. The pitch is gonna be awful. Stadiums will be half-filled. We’re going to lose money. I think this is gonna a big black eye for the US.

Frankly, I’ll wear half-empty stadiums and pitiful local enthusiasm as a Badge of Honor.
Liberals are drawn to soccer precisely because it is one of the few remaining venues where American exceptionalism does not prevail. The World Cup, rather, is a working model of President Obama’s foreign policy vision: a world in which America has no special role, where inferior countries are no longer humbled by American greatness, where every country is exceptional, and free shots on goal are not earned, but given away as a handout to those who have mastered the art of falling down. In the group stage, at least, the games can end in a tie.
Sounds like they’ve realized that they are going to have a lot of empty seats for the TV cameras.
Might be cheaper to deal with that guy down in (Austin?) that made cutouts to use in stadiums during the Fauci Flu.
