Land O'Lakes finally settles the debate: How long can you leave butter out on the counter?
allrecipes ^ | May 3, 2026 | Bailey Fink

When it comes to storing food, many of us follow the practices our parents and grandparents used. Who cares about reading the package instructions when Grandma left her butter in the butter bell all day, every day, right?

So, maybe your butter's home is on the counter in a dish. Or if not on the counter at all times, perhaps you leave your butter sitting out overnight to soften before baking.

But, should you leave butter sitting out, unrefrigerated? And, if so, how long can it be on the counter before it becomes unsafe to eat? We asked the experts at Land O'Lakes to put the debate to rest once and for all—and some of you might not like the answer......

Even though room-temperature butter likely won't make you sick, Land O'Lakes recommends storing butter in the fridge when you're not using it. But, if you're in the heat of baking and forget to put the last little knob back in the fridge right away, that's ok—just so long as you don't let it sit out for a few extra hours.

"Do not leave butter at room temperature for more than 4 hours," says Engen. "Always return any unused butter to the refrigerator and be aware that butter left outside refrigeration may become darker in color and have [its] flavor affected."

Keeping butter in the fridge is a good rule of thumb, as it helps ensure the tasty fat won’t pick up any undesirable odors or flavors from your kitchen. Plus, the cool fridge temps make butter last much longer because room-temperature butter can go rancid within a day or two, according to the USDA, while refrigerated or frozen butter can last months.

cool fridge temps make butter last much longer because...

NOONE can get any butter from the near frozen log of yellow goodness, and even if they get a little bit they can’t spread it on toast or bread!!!

Leave it out!

I always leave it out. Doesn’t last long because sourdough and butter is my addiction.

A French butter dish, is a cylindrical container used to maintain the freshness and spreadable consistency of butter without refrigeration. Butter is kept in what appears to be the lid, inverted, and submerged in water held in the base.

Better known in the US as a "butter bell." Been in use since the pioneering days.

I always have at least one full stick (and usually part of a second) outside the fridge.

And I didn't need permission from Land O'Lakes.

Meanwhile, people on the Oregon Trail churned their own. And the other thing they ROUTINELY did was buy and carry canned butter... on the Oregon trail, with no refrigeration.

But Lesbo-run, Indian-hating, lawyer-infested Land-O-Lakes knows better.

Agreed. What was good enough for grandmother in the 1950’s is good enough for me. I keep the bread in the freezer and the butter on the counter.

I leave salted butter in a small crock on the counter, a stick at a time. Unsalted butter stays in the fridge til I need it. I’ve been using butter instead of margarine for almost 50 years, with no storage problems. I have occasionally left unsalted butter out if I’m out of salted; it does not keep. Gets that funny old mayonnaise gel look after a couple of days.

Last year I left half a stick of Kerry Gold out in a covered butter dish. Some little scout ant found it and before long I had the entire colony in it.

I removed it into the trash and let Terro handle the rest.

Ants like real butter.

In the last five years, I bought butter once, after the new MAHA rules came out. Organic, salt free butter. It’s been in the the butter leeper in fridge for months. Will probably give it to my nice neighbors. Used it once on gluten-free pancakes, didn’t melt fast enough. Syrup is enough.

I eat potatoes every night, EVOO is great on them and very good for you. All the stores sell EVOO but I discovered that AMZ is now selling Whole Foods products, buy teriffic EVOO there for less than I pay in stores. Label says from CA, and organic, which is what I use.

Jeff should really pay me for all the good things I say about AMZ. Was one of their first cusomers, when they only sold books. Now? Almost daily deliveries of something. Cat food? Bedroom slipperI’ve heard they even sell pre-fab houses. Cars? Don’t know/

True - WAAAAY to much non-butter oil in it.

I usually buy the Irish butters at Publix, since they are the closest to the real butter your great grandmother churned.

The worst butter you can cook with are the low end store brands.
