That Nightlight In Your Bedroom? It Could Be Raising Your Heart Attack Risk
StudyFinds ^ | Oct 27, 2025 | Research led by Daniel P. Windred, PhD (Flinders University)

In A Nutshell

Sleeping with the lights on is linked to a 42% higher risk of heart attack compared to sleeping in darkness, based on a study tracking nearly 90,000 adults over 9 years.

The brightest bedrooms also showed higher risks for heart failure, coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeat, and stroke.

The connection held even after accounting for diet, exercise, smoking, and genetics, suggesting light at night is a factor worth managing for heart health.

Simple fixes like blackout curtains, turning off devices, and keeping bedrooms dark may help protect your heart.

Maybe it’s the glow from your alarm clock, the TV you fall asleep to, or the hallway light you leave on throughout the night. Whatever the source, sleeping with ambient light might be doing more than disrupting your sleep—it could be affecting your heart. A study of 89,000 people found those with the brightest bedrooms had a 42% higher rate of heart attacks over nearly 10 years.

Never been a fan of leaving the light on, I put a piece of tape over those blue LEDs and the green ones. All my clocks are red LED.

Yes, I was surprised how much blue LED lights on clocks light up the room at night. I too have switched back to red.

We have a motion activated night light so I don’t trip and fall on my butt.

If this is ultimately saying that people aren’t getting enough sleep, then there’s an obvious solution. It’s in Paul’s teaching in 1st Corinthians 7:1-5. That helps a married couple sleep a lot better. LOL

I basically sleep in a tomb. Dark and quiet. The neighbors letting their dogs out in the morning is my alarm clock but they are 50 yards away.

Given the important issues they are facing in the UK at the moment, I’m sure the taxpayers there are grateful the ‘experts’ are saving them from the evils of nightlights.

If I kill my night light, I’ll have an 1100% higher chance of stumbling down the spiral staircase after tripping over a cat.

Ours are more like 50 FEET away and the damn things go off all day. What I wouldn't give for a well calibrated snooze button sometimes.

Oh great. Now what do I do about the monsters under my bed? They can cause heart attacks too, you know.

Blackout curtains, temperature at 68 or lower, and I sleep like a rock. Eight hours per night is critical to one’s overall health.

I keep my bed next to the window with the shades open so I can stare at the stars. It’s not like there are any neighbors close by.

I'm calling cum hoc ergo propter hoc On this. Kind of like the sun comes up when the cock crows so the cock influences the sun to come up.

The actual truth —that they REALLY don’t want you to know— is that night lights are actually Monster Beacons! You got a nightlight? Guaranteed, Monsters under the bed...
