An ordinary spring day quickly became extraordinary after a nature-loving metal detectorist unearthed a cache of ancient treasure.
Marius Mangeac confirmed the discovery to Fox News Digital. He said he found the hoard in a field near Letca Veche, a small village in southern Romania..
Mangeac said that he found the coins “on a beautiful Saturday that didn’t foreshadow anything of what was to come.”
“I took my detector and went out alone, as I often do, for exercise and to relax in the fields and forests,”..
“I didn’t think this day would surprise me and bring me face to face with history.”
But suddenly his metal detector began beeping – and soon, Mangeac was looking at a hoard of 1,469 Roman coins.
Seeing the silver denarii, Mangeac said that his heart “[was] beating quite hard.”
“[I] even thought about pinching myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming,”

The discovery was made in a field near the village of Letca Veche.
...
Mangeac estimated that the coins are at least 2,000 years old.
After two strenuous days of photographing the coins, he handed them over to the town hall in Letca Nouă.
...
I hope that one day I can take my child to the museum and explain to him how I was lucky enough to discover a page of our people’s history.”
Mangeac’s discovery comes weeks after a pair of metal detectorists found ancient treasure in the Romanian commune of Breaza in Transylvania.
The treasure dated back to the Dacians, who unsuccessfully warred against the Roman Empire in the second century A.D.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Putting the Rome in Romania!
Find treasure and tell the world, starting with the government./s
Well I found a 1945 wheat penny in my change recently, have no idea what the 80 year old coin is worth, but I will keep it as a souvenier.
Mackenzie Crook was a very, VERY bad man in the 'Sherlock' series. He's obviously very versatile, LOL! Rachel Stirling is Diana Rigg's ('The Avengers') daughter - spitting image!
Your Wheat Penny is worth 5 cents. Maybe 8 cent, depending upon condition. ;)
My Dear Old Grandpa left me his ‘coin collection’ which has turned out to be worth more as scrap metal. ;)
Why would you ever report this? Now the government will take your find and give you a tiny little fraction of the value.
Per the thread title, the man did not “stumble” and he was not out on a “nature walk.”
You don’t have to shoot, but you should still still shovel and shut up.
Go to Pawn Stars.
It was where retiring Roman soldiers were granted land.
I’ll second that! It was very very good! Actually written by the tall guy in the picture. I remember it started out with someone coming upon those two in a field and asking them, “Are you metal detectors?” They indicated their devices and said, “No, these are metal detectors. We are detectorists.” I knew then it would be worth watching.
Why would the town hall be entitled to them? The town hall did not exist 2000 years ago.
If I ever invent a time machine the first thing I will do is find a horde of ancient coins. Then I’ll go back in time and be rich!
The very common date 1945 Wheat Penny is worth about 2 cents to a coin dealer. $0.0284463 is the melt value but it is still illegal to melt copper pennies.

Romanian Laws for Found Treasure
Romanian law requires that any treasure found by metal detectorists or other means must be reported to and handed over to state authorities. This ensures that historical artifacts are properly documented and preserved. For example, Marius Mangeac, a metal detector enthusiast, discovered a hoard of Ancient Roman treasure in a Romanian field and immediately reported it to the authorities.
Similarly, when two metal detectorists found ancient treasure in the Romanian commune of Breaza in Transylvania, they also followed the legal procedures to report their findings.
This practice helps protect and study Romania’s rich cultural heritage.
