SYDNEY — New research challenges the one-size-fits-all approach to diet, at least when it comes to protein sources. Scientists have discovered that eating meat benefits children while plant-based proteins help adults live longer.
A study by researchers at the University of Sydney examined food systems across 101 countries over nearly six decades. The findings reveal that young children survive better with more animal protein in their diet, while adults over 60 tend to live longer when consuming more plant-based proteins.
Published in Nature Communications, the study found that optimal protein balance varies with age, which has important implications as countries shift toward more environmentally sustainable food systems.
The research team examined food supply and mortality data from 1961-2018, investigating how the mix of proteins available in a country’s food system related to survival rates at different ages.
Their conclusion overturns the notion that plant-based diets are universally better. For young children, animal protein showed clear benefits. Kids had better survival rates in countries where meat, dairy, and other animal products made up more of the protein supply.
Animal foods contain complete protein with all essential amino acids plus easily absorbed forms of crucial nutrients like iron, zinc, and vitamin A—particularly important during rapid growth and development stages.
The Age Divide in Protein Benefits
For adults, especially those past middle age, the data revealed an opposite pattern. Countries with more plant protein in their food systems showed better survival rates for people over 60 and higher overall life expectancy. The benefits of plant protein became especially noticeable when combined with lower fat consumption.
Fat intake followed this same age-related pattern. Higher fat availability benefited children but appeared harmful for adults, revealing how our nutritional needs transform throughout life.
The researchers analyzed over 4,000 country-year-sex-specific life tables, accounting for economic wealth, population size, and time trends to isolate the effects of protein sources on survival rates.

“Protein is a crucial part of the human diet, but as eating habits change and developed countries look to decarbonise, where we get our protein from has come under greater scrutiny,” says Dr. Alistair Senior, the lead researcher of the study. “The knowledge that plant-based protein is associated with a longer life is really important as we consider not only how our diets impact our own longevity, but the health of the planet.”

The analysis also doesn’t differentiate between types of fats (saturated vs. unsaturated) or carbohydrate qualities (refined vs. complex), which could influence health outcomes independently.

At 78 years of age I eat lots of MEAT as I have an artificial heart valve and take large doses of Warfarin. The Vitamin K in greens messes me up bad.

As I have gotten older, meat has become harder to digest. I try to eat less of it, but a hamburger and fries is still my favorite meal, unfortunately.

If hamburgers and fries are hard to your digestion, it may be due to anything (seed oils can wreck havoc some stomachs) but you can be 100% sure it’s not because of the beef patties.
One word: Constipation.
All of this diet concern is mostly meant to keep a bunch of people employed and selling stuff. It produces some very expensive urine and excrement.
Use common sense in what and how much you eat and you will probably be all right. Indeed there are some folks that have health concerns and must be concerned about their diet but for most of us eat and drink away.

I am 89 years old and take NO prescription drugs. I still look after my wife of 68 years since she has some problems not related to diet. I wish they were! She is the one that fed me that dastardly tasty stuff...
I contend that the most important decision you make in life is whom you chose for grandparents. Genetics is far more important than a 70/30 hamburger! Unfortunately you can not buy them over the counter or by prescription...

Totally untrue. Criteria of defined constipation include discomforts like bloating or bloody stool. None of it happens with a carnivore no fiber diet, on the contrary, it resolves constipation, any carnivore can attest to that.
Fibers, contrary to what the current (and nearly always wrong) nutrition ‘science’ says, are more likely the cause of constipation than the solution. The Ho KS, et al. study on patients with real clinically diagnosed (and not imagined or perceived) constipation (2012 World Journal of Gastroenterology Study) found that, brace yourself : “Stopping or reducing dietary fiber intake reduces constipation and its associated symptoms”. You can look up for the details of the study, the no fiber group has the best improvement (after the 6 months study period) with incresed stool frequency compared to the reduced fiber group and the increased fiber group has constipation unchanged or worsened.
Regardless any ‘study’, I know the thing for myself. I eat only animal products with nearly no fibers (probably just once a month) and have my bowel movements everyday always at the same time. If not, all I need to do is increase my fat intake (eg more butter).

If you think that President Trump eats mostly fast food and drinks soda, you haven’t seen what’s on his dinner table at the Trump tower, Mar a lago or the White house. He most probably knows how bad carbs are since he drinks only Coca Light.

Less when you’re old because it could cause excess iron. But if you donate blood, that reduces stored iron and that lets you eat all the meat you want, and you won’t have excess iron.
Genetics is far more important than a 70/30 hamburger!
