Astronomy Picture of the Day - An Unusual Hole in Mars

Explanation: What created this unusual hole in Mars? Actually, there are numerous holes pictured in this Swiss cheese-like landscape, with all-but-one of them showing a dusty, dark, Martian terrain beneath evaporating, light, carbon dioxide ice. The most unusual hole is on the upper right, spans about 100 meters, and seems to punch through to a lower level. Why this hole exists and why it is surrounded by a circular crater remains a topic of speculation, although a leading hypothesis is that it was created by a meteor impact. Holes such as this are of particular interest because they might be portals to lower levels that extend into expansive underground caves. If so, these naturally occurring tunnels are relatively protected from the harsh surface of Mars, making them relatively good candidates to contain Martian life. These pits are therefore also prime targets for possible future spacecraft, robots, and even human interplanetary explorers.

Well, at least it isn’t an unusual hole elsewhere in the solar system.

Ah I read the news today, oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall

To my admittedly untrained eye that looks like a sinkhole.

No crater rim as I'd expect from an impact crater.
No lava flow as I'd expect from a volcanic crater.

Just a slumped in cone as I'd expect from surface collapse due to underground water erosion...

the melted areas of the snow says that hole gurgled a little to create droplets recently.

Yeah, that’s what it looks like to me, too. Not the first one spotted on Mars.

The Moon has them, too, most likely from a collapsed lava tube.

The write up says that hole is 100 meters across. why does it look like maybe an inch!?? the melted areas of snow and a smooth opening to resemble water and sand erosion? In the depth of the hole the smoothness is only on the upper crust.
The consistency of the soil in the melted areas would match my guesstimate of the hole being only an inch. something is wrong with this picture.

If indeed that is 100 meters... 300ft, then what took the picture?? I do not believe Igenuity can fly that high!!??

“If so, these naturally occurring tunnels are relatively protected from the harsh surface of Mars, making them relatively good candidates to contain Martian life.”

I am so darned tired of the BS search for life in places where there obviously ISN”T any.

Look for life on planets in the “Goldilocks” zones. Better odds.

I don’t believe that the Random combining of chemicals made
buy cosmic events created complex life forms. Complex life forms require too many things to work exactly right or that life form fades away.
Something sparked life on Planets like ours, notice these planets are so far apart that with our Euclidean physics laws we’ll never interact.

Happy Palm Sunday.

if the pic was taken from orbit, that sure is an optical illusion... Having a pic that is zoomed out a little would be more better!!

It’s a vent for the underground cities on Mars.

There is a Mars orbiter which can take detailed pictures of the surface. Above are some photos it took of the Spiders from Mars.

I’ve been watching what I think is very cool event the past week or so. Due east, right above the horizon, and just before sunrise (I’m in Utah and up at 6am) I noticed a very bright object that seemed not exactly round like a planet or a star. So I grabbed my iPhone and via SkyView lo and behold 4 planets overlapping and basically right on top of each other. Venus, Mercury, Saturn, and Neptune. The not exactly round part is Venus and Saturn next to each other. Been watching it every morning and could even see it through some thin clouds.
