The Trump administration is shutting down EV chargers at all federal government buildings and is also expected to sell off the General Services Administration‘s (GSA) newly bought EVs.
GSA, which manages all federal government-owned buildings, also operates the federal buildings’ EV chargers. Federally owned EVs and federal employee-owned personal EVs are charged on those 8,000 charging ports.
The Verge reports it’s been told by a source that plans will be officially announced internally next week, and it’s seen an email that GSA has already sent to regional offices about the plans:
“As GSA has worked to align with the current administration, we have received direction that all GSA-owned charging stations are not mission-critical.”
The GSA is working on the timing of canceling current network contracts that keep the EV chargers operational. Once those contracts are canceled, the stations will be taken out of service and “turned off at the breaker,” the email reads. Other chargers will be turned off starting next week.
“Neither Government Owned Vehicles nor Privately Owned Vehicles will be able to charge at these charging stations once they’re out of service.”
Colorado Public Radio first reported yesterday that it had seen the email that was sent to the Denver Federal Center, which has 22 EV charging stations at 11 locations.

Time needed to charge a vehicle and the EV fire hazard alone justify this move.
Drill, Baby, Drill!
Wouldn’t it be better to leave them up and running and charge people to use them at roughly the same price as we pay for gas at a service station?
LOL! Every day it’s something new to drive the left even more insane. Anyone notice not a word from Pelosi? I really think she’s in a padded room wearing a straight jacket.
Yeah - I agree
Can’t help but wonder what Elon thinks of that.
Do the employees get to charge their personal cars for free?
Elon knows the charging ports in question were not per the standard he created and thus of no real value
Wind and solar are great if you don’t have access to the grid or don’t need a reliable power source. Government subsidies do not improve the product, competition does. EV’s have their place but I’m unable to come up with such a place in my life.
Trump’s a businessman.
Since he’s shutting them down, those charging stations likely cost more to maintain than they generate in revenue.
Well said.
Why? Are the ports defective? A lot of folks are driving either EVs or hybrids these days, at least they are in the Bay Area near San Francisco.
Exactly.
“Anyone notice not a word from Pelosi? I really think she’s in a padded room wearing a straight jacket.”
The Feds announced yesterday or day before that they are selling the federal building named after Pelosi. https://abc7.com/post/donald-trump-looking-sell-nancy-pelosi-federal-building-50-united-nations-plaza-san-francisco-ca-bruno/15941677/
Just a few days ago the leftists were getting rid of their Teslas because they hate Elon.
They shouldn’t be complaining because they won’t need charging stations now.
Just convert them (sell them) to Chargepoint or electrify America or EVGo. Let the market operate them.
The expensive part is done- getting high voltage to the charging sites.
*I* don’t get to charge for free, and we had PAY AS YOU GO chargepoints at work (when I was working).
Also in order to recoup costs, you pay $.36 - $.58 per kWh to charge your vehicle. That is 4-5 X what the electricity alone costs. And the faster the charge a available, the more you pay.
No free EV ride on taxpayers. Pay your own way. Like I do!
I was in a meeting with our CFO over ten years ago. The company had EV chargers and she plugged in her Chevy Volt during her reserved time. Half way through the meeting, she said “My charging time is up. I have to go move my car.” The CFO! So we all sat there twiddling our thumbs for 15 minutes.
I would venture a guess that most of these are not located in DC, but all across the country. I would also venture a guess that people don’t even bother charging their EV’s at home, but just do it at work on the taxpayer’s dime.
I was this close to getting a Federal job and requesting my free gasoline since there are free EV chargers. When they say NO, I sue!
