Woman banned from every Walmart in America over sneaky self-checkout trick

A Tennessee woman has been banned from every Walmart in the country after an epic shoplifting spree.

Ashley Cross, 37, cannot enter any of the grocery giant's 4,600 stores after being caught running a bar code scam.

Cross, a known shoplifter, was caught using barcode for a watch battery to scan multiple items for $1 at self-checkouts.

Memphis Police caught Cross in the process of stealing a pair of jeans, a t-shirt some boots and 11 packs of ramen noodles from a Walmart on Elvis Presley Boulevard earlier this week.

The total haul was valued at $137.34, according to the police report.

She wasn’t working alone — another woman with her was charged with stealing $57.86 worth of goods, which included two bras.

Due to her history of theft, Cross has now found herself on list that bans her from entering another Walmart again.

'We value our customers and associates and want them to have a pleasant shopping experience,' Walmart said in a statement.

'Though rare, there are instances when someone is no longer welcome in our stores.'

Cross has been charged for criminal trespass and theft of merchandise less than $1,000.

She is currently being held in jail on a $7,500 bond, according to News 3.

Cross is due to appear in court on February 19.

Shoplifting is an ongoing concern for Walmart, and the chain has made great effort to try and curtail it.

Self-checkouts have been a particular issue, leading staff to manually check customers' receipts against the items in their bags.

"Discover this ingenious self-checkout hack that Walmart doesn't want you to know about!"

Oh, you mean shoplifting?

I love self-checkout, especially when I only have a few items to buy.

Women like this one are ruining it for everyone.

While self check-out is fertile for abuse, this doesn’t really add up.
The rack with the empty checked-out bags is supposedly on a scale, and the system knows the weight of each UPC item. If the scale was expecting watch battery mass, and seeing, say olive oil mass, it would be expected to squawk.

“The total haul was valued at $137.34”

Now that is a loser right there. Gets arrested over a lousy $137 and some change.

Huh ...

For the past year or a little more, every Wal*Mart self checkout I have used had a camera watching me. Video doesn't do much good if it isn't used ....

As for receipts ... they never ask to see mine. Is it "Old Man Privilege" or "White Privilege"?

Walmarts are notorious for criminal activity.

Anyone who steals a credit card runs straight to Walmart to by gift cards. And Walmart employees don’t check ID or anything.

Fred Meyer has video at each station, shows product being scanned, the persons hands, and item name & price.

Only works in a high-trust society, and we are most definitely moving away from that.

Yeah, I'm thinking this one needed a little scrutiny.

They can’t check ID for that.

There is a limit on gift cards in total.

But that’s not a guarantee against fraud.

Thieves often run to fast food and gas stations ⛽⛽⛽ hoping to get ahead of the card being shut down.

Simple way around that. Grab the tag off the cheapest bra, or whatever, and grab the most expensive. That way the receipt says bra. Might not turn everything into $1 but would get you a good discount. You’d have to be pretty good at slight of hand.

At my Walmart the lady at the out door looks at your receipt and glances at what you bought. I suspect they subject suspicious character to much closer scrutiny than people who are look respectable. That’s not always a good idea; the first step to being a successful criminal is not to look like one.
