While self check-out is fertile for abuse, this doesn’t really add up.
The rack with the empty checked-out bags is supposedly on a scale, and the system knows the weight of each UPC item. If the scale was expecting watch battery mass, and seeing, say olive oil mass, it would be expected to squawk.
Fred Meyer has video at each station, shows product being scanned, the persons hands, and item name & price.
Most grocery stores have weighing self-checkout kiosks ... but not Wal-mart.

That’s not how it works.
There will always be one Walmart associate manning the self checkout with their Walmart issued phone.
That phone shows everything that’s being scanned by customers.
If the associate sees something that doesn’t match the item shown by the phone, they shut down the scanner so the customer can’t scan the rest of their items and then the associate “assists’ them.
