Dozens of new obesity drugs are coming: these are the ones to watch
Nature ^ | February 12, 2025 | Elie Dolgin

Next-generation obesity drugs will work differently from Ozempic and Wegovy — aiming to deliver greater weight loss with fewer side effects.

For Kristian Cook, every pizza box he opened was another door closed on the path to overcoming obesity. “I had massive cravings for pizza,” he says. “That was my biggest downfall.”

At 114 kilograms and juggling a daily regimen of medications for high cholesterol, hypertension and gout, the New Zealander resolved to take action. In late 2022, at the age of 46, Cook joined a clinical trial that set out to test a combination of the weight-loss drug semaglutide — better known by its brand names, Ozempic or Wegovy — and an experimental drug designed to preserve muscle while shedding fat.

Muscle loss is a big concern for people on anti-obesity medications such as semaglutide. These ‘GLP-1 agonists’ mimic a natural gut hormone — glucagon-like peptide 1 — to suppress appetite and regulate metabolism. But reducing calories leads to an energy deficit, which the body often makes up for by burning muscle. The experimental drug that Cook received, called bimagrumab, seems to counteract this muscle loss.

It’s one of more than 100 anti-obesity drug candidates that are in various stages of development. The next wave of medications, which are likely to hit pharmacy shelves in the next few years, resemble drugs that are already on the market. But close behind are numerous therapies being developed specifically for their muscle-sparing weight-loss potential. Dozens more are aimed at different biological pathways and could redefine obesity treatment in decades to come.

“We’re working to create the next generation of healthy weight-loss solutions,” says Philip Larsen, who played a key part in the early development of GLP-1 drugs and is now chief executive of SixPeaks Bio, an obesity-focused start-up company in Basel, Switzerland.

A friend of mine is a member of the test group for one of these. It does seem to be helping her. When we go out she tends to eat about half her meal and does not want desert that often.

I’ve always been slim so I could eat what I wanted when I wanted.
I could never summon the discipline to turn down a slice of pizza.
We have much sympathy for dieters even if we haven’t been there ourselves.

What would work the best is a pill that actually gives you all the gut flora you need.

Yeah, I know there are delayed release probiotics that can make it to your lower intestine alive, but they only contain a small fraction of the different types of organisms you need.

Now that’s taking charge of your situation! Have another slice fatso and wash it down with some chemicals.

I have. They still don’t have everything you need.

It’s really wonderful that there are people like you who know everything.

“Research” Bimagrumab is used by bodybuilders already, if it really is a myostatin inhibitor.

I think it’s already starting for Ozempic. Several class action lawsuits being explored. When GLP-1s eventually get pulled from the market, the floodgates will really open.

I shudder to think of the damage that 10 straight years of intentional digestive paralysis is going to cause to the overall health of the victims.

“But reducing calories leads to an energy deficit, which the body often makes up for by burning muscle.”

There is that disinformation again.

If you fast and eat Keto your body will burn fat, not muscle. Stop spiking your insulin with 3 meals a day and constant snacking.

You don’t lose weight to get healthy....you get healthy to lose weight. Pills ain’t gonna do it.

I have not. I’ve bought the pot to make the kefir. I bought the bug too. But it didn’t arrive. Now I have a pot. It squats on my kitchen counter. Useless pot. I don’t like it a whole lot. It blocks my view of the clock. I’m. trying to decide as to whether to complain or rebuy the L Reuteri. What say you?

I’ve been off the wagon lately. Too much soda.

But my pattern is around 16/8 which is still good.

I need to get back to OMAD and treat to just one soda a day and then get better on the sodas.

But they’re so tasty!

-----------

What's funny with the probiotics suckers believers is that they are convinced they are eating "good bugs". But none of them have asked themselves why those good bugs must be eaten again and again. Aren't they supposed to live happiply in the microbiome with other bugs and have plenty of children?
Talk about a religion!
