Bronze Age Footprints Preserved During Vesuvius Eruption Are Found in Italy

Bronze Age footprints, both from animals and from humans, were initially identified as work was conducted on the Diramazione Nocera-Cava dei Tirreni methane pipeline in the municipalities of Nocera Superiore, Nocera Inferiore, Roccapiemonte, and Castel San Giorgio. This prompted a two-year-long archaeological investigation.

SoGEarch, an Italian archaeological society, oversaw the excavations through the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Salerno and Avellino.

The footprints found near the Casarzano stream in Salerno, roughly 20 miles away from Pompeii, contained rock fragments from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Experts believe the people who left behind these prints were trying to escape the eruption.

Most associate Vesuvius with the 79 CE eruption that encased Pompeii in ash, preserving it for eternity. But this eruption happened about 2,000 years earlier, in 1995 BCE, and is considered to have been even more destructive.

At the time of the Bronze Age eruption, there was an organized community village with huts, as evidenced by the remains of the earth foundations and ceramic fragments.

I wondered how and why they would assert that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avellino_eruption

Alrighty, then.

There’s a similar thing in Hawaii, which is attributed to a pre-colonial battle. The defeated army had to flee across molten lava.

:^) The depth of deposits is how they estimate the energy expended in prehistoric eruptions. Looks like someone added the footprints shot already.

Whoops, my error, the footprints were left in ash which then hardened. Not so hard on the feet.

If one wants to build in Italy, it’s usually best to figure out a way to do that without having a foundation...at least if you want to keep schedule.

Five or so years ago I was at home a lot (for some reason, heh) and watched a lot of vids about those one-euro fixer uppers in Italy. One of the vids that the guy wandered through an entirely empty ruined mountain village (there are some few of these, a big quake after WWII wrecked them, and the gubmint built no doubt very attractive apartment buildings down the slope a bit from each site).

I noticed one doorway was framed in tiles, and they appeared to be those kind that were used in the walls of the calderiums to keep the chamber pipin’ hot. Naturally I could be mistaken, but if so, it suggests that there are or at least were ruins of a pretty posh Roman villa that wound up being used as a source of building materials.

Gotta say, I’m a little jealous.
