Scientists aren't particularly surprised to find volcanism in the region, which is home to active volcanoes like Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna. But the new complex is unusual because it was created by a rare kind of fault...
The western Mediterranean is seismically restless because of the collision of three tectonic plates: the African, the Eurasian and the Anatolian. Making matters more complex is a small chunk of crust called the Adriatic-Ionian microplate, which broke off of the African Plate more than 65 million years ago and is now being pushed under the larger Eurasian Plate in a process called subduction. Mount Vesuvius is one of the volcanoes created by subduction.
Previously, scientists discovered a series of undersea volcanic arcs created by this tectonic unrest, starting near the Sardinian coast, with increasingly younger arcs southward and eastward. These arcs were like an arrow pointing ever farther eastward, prompting Pepe and his colleagues to search for an even younger arc about 9 miles (15 kilometers) off the coast of Calabria, called the "toe" of the "boot" of Italy.
There, based on seafloor mapping, seismic data and magnetic anomalies, the researchers found a 772-square-mile (2,000 square km) region of lava flows, volcanic mountains and hydrothermal chimneys; vents in the seafloor allow hot minerals to spew out and form chimney-like structures. They dubbed the new area the Diamante‐Enotrio‐Ovidio Volcanic‐Intrusive Complex, after three flat-topped seamounts (underwater mountains formed by extinct volcanoes) that dominate the seafloor.

could underwater volcanic activity cause the ocean temperature to rise? Could phenomena such as this cause “global warming”; could there be natural causes to temperatures rising?
I thought Pepe was a frog?
The Mediterranean Sea is getting warmer and Salter.

Sorry, make that iceagenow.info
Ain't no big surprise.
Some yrs ago I got into it with a famous News commentator.
His claim was Man causing increased El Niño and in turn Global Warming.
I suggested volcanism off the S. American could be the reason. Part of the Ring of Fire.
Sure it could, if there WAS any measurable warming.
The only valid answer science can currently give is "insufficient data". There is WAY too much of the ocean floor unmapped to provide a statistically valid data set".
Yet we are told that the science is settled.
One aspect of global warming that always troubles me, is that, even if we accept the premise than man’s activity affects things, that there are obvious natural cycles occurring which are beyond our control or understanding.
For example, there have been numerous ice ages in earth’s history. Chicago was buried under a mile of ice during the last ice age. All that ice melted because of some natural climate changes which caused warming and melting. That ice didn’t melt because Cro Magnon man had coal fired power plants.
No "real" scientist would ever make such a statement. Anyone who does automatically disqualifies themselves to bear the title, no matter their credentials.
Here's some more REAL settled science....conductors moving in a magnetic field generate electric currents. The sun has a magnetic field. The interior of the earth is a conductor. If the suns field gets more intense (and it has), how much more energy is directly deposited in the earth's interior??
This source of energy is completely non-photonic, bypasses the atmosphere completely, and is totally unaccounted for, yet could be a major driver for increasing vulcanism.
I have yet to see anyone (aside from myself) even mention it is a possibility, yet the science behind it is as settled as it can get.

Thanks fieldmarshaldj. In the fun-filled world of catastrophism, earthquakes and volcanoes are like pitching pennies are to real sports.
