Baseball, as baseball, is not yet half a century old. The making of the first; ball is attributed to the Lydians, and it is true that ball-playing was a favorite way of recreation with the ancient Greeks. Although the greatest game of baseball probably had its origin long ago with the stages of its evolution being marked by "Club Ball," j "Rounders,"

“Town ball” was played on Cape Cod in the Revolutionary War era and the local newspapers printed the box scores, remarkably similar to today’s box scores. Same nine positions plus a roving short fielder. There were minor differences as to number of balls needed to walk and strikes to strike out. Three outs per half inning.

Yep,

Nats. Dusty. Toothpick. Choke.

Hey man, I'm a Phillies fan so to relieve the boredom I switch on MASN and see the Nats and the O's in all their glory.

I’m a Nats fan. It was choketastic last year for us. Worst division in baseball, and yet the amazings had another miracle in the 2nd half, and deserved to win over the Nats.

What is the deal with your old closer? I half expect him to be awesome this season or flame the heck out after two chances.

That Paps-Storen thing was just plain ugly. Paps needs to be kept in a box and only brought out for the ninth, he'll give you 40 or so saves hopefully but he's getting a bit long in tooth now. Let him at the fans or the press and all hell breaks loose.

My son works a few blocks from the stadium so he takes in a few Nats games and brings us souvenirs and hats so the wife and I kind of adopted the Nats as a second team, probably watched as many Nats games on MASN as we did Phillies games on CSN-P, which is just about every one. She hates F.P. I don't think she gets his humor

I dig FP, it’s either brilliantly stupid or stupidly brilliant. The silences Bob carpenter is reduced to after the latest FP gem are pretty funny. Does your wife like the three stooges type humor?

As far as paps, he is going to have to be flawless in his first chances, if he starts off slow he will get the hook, I think.

...Ball Play in the Odyssey

The first written account of ball play in western literature is written by Homer in the Odyssey dating back between c. 725 BC. Homer’s epic story that depicted the trials of Odysseus was written 400 years after the Trojan Wars. There is little evidence to indicate balls and ball play took place during the time of the Trojan wars. However, in the Odyssey, after Odysseus sails from Ogygia, his raft is wrecked by a storm, and he is washed up on Scheria. Meanwhile, the goddess Athena, who sneaks into the palace, disguises herself as a sea captain’s daughter and instructs princess Nausicaa, the daughter of King Alkinoos in her sleep to go to seashore to wash cloths. The next morning, Nausicaa and her maids go to the seashore, and, after washing the cloths, they start to play a ball game on the beach with laughs, giggles, and shouts. Odysseus, who was exhausted from adventure and was sleeping nearby, is awakened by the shouts. He covers his nakedness with thick leaves and ask for help from the team. Upon seeing the unkept Odysseus in this state, the maids run away, but Nausicaa, encouraged by Athena, stands her ground and talks to him.

Just his luck. He washes up on a beach and finds women who play with their balls.

That excerpt reminded me of this Roman fresco, and the women playing catch.
