D.C. can expect to be in the new U.S. attorney’s crosshairs

The U.S. attorney is one of the most consequential figures in the District of Columbia’s criminal justice system. Washington might soon learn that lesson firsthand after Donald Trump’s eventual choice for the role — that is, his handpicked sheriff — assumes the reins from U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves. This week, Graves announced that he will officially step down on Jan. 16, four days before Trump steps up to take the oath of office.

A cautious and understated prosecutor, Graves will leave with numerous accomplishments under his belt. His targeting of repeat offenders has paid off with reductions in gun- and drug-related violence. But the credit he takes for D.C. recording “the least amount of total violent crime it has had in over 50 years” in 2024 must be shared with D.C. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith and her team of officers.

Graves can also boast of having made a priority of prosecuting politically motivated violence and destruction. His office was part of the largest investigation in Justice Department history, resulting in charges against nearly 1,600 people — and the conviction of more than 1,250 — involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol.

On that note, let us pause.

Trump has called Jan. 6 “a day of love,” labeled the rioters as “patriots,” and repeatedly promised to pardon some of those charged and convicted. Graves might well have decided to get going while the going is good, since U.S. attorneys traditionally resign at the beginning of a new White House administration. Some are asked to stay. But the odds of a Trump-led Justice Department asking the Jan. 6 prosecutor to stick around were as close to zero as possible.

Were that the end.

Graves’s departure leaves an opening...

Well, that’s exactly what I was thinking. I wonder if a confirmation process is required?

That and simply not charging people for crimes. They didn’t charge the summer rioters, after all.

And, with all the manpower diverted to chasing down grannies who may have stepped outside of a velvet rope on J6, there were bound to be fewer cops doing regular investigative work or catching crooks.

“”[Expletive Deleted] “”

Guess it wouldn’t matter in the new year. All the posts that should have been deleted because of foul language are still up...Anything goes this year regardless of Jim’s reminders?

“”Sorry if I’m missing it...do we know 47’s replacement for Graves?””

I must have missed it also unless the operative word is “eventual choice”.....

Top priority for the new DOJ. Pursue Graves to the ends of the earth. Find something - anything - to charge him with. Drag him in front of a favorable judge. Deny him bail. Throw him into the worst prison you can find. Let him sit there and rot for years and years before trial.

How many of those rioting at the White House during the Antifa/BLM riots were prosecuted? Graves is a total political hack.
