Lionel Messi has risked further fury after opting against attending the glamorous White House ceremony to collect his Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The World Cup winner was awarded America's highest civilian honor on Saturday, and was invited to meet Joe Biden and collect the award in Washington DC.
As photos began to surface of the ceremony, it became clear that Messi was one of the few recipients to skip the event, and wasn't pictured on stage with Biden.
The likes of Bono, Magic Johnson, Hillary Clinton and Michael J. Fox all headed for the American capital, but there was no sign of Messi.
It was later confirmed that he had not attended, with official word coming shortly after that his absence was due to a 'scheduling issue'.
It was also reported that nobody attended to accept the award on his behalf, and the announcer even skipped over Messi's name when reading out the 2025 recipients of the medal.

It’d be great if he Saud he’s waiting for President Trump to give it to him.
I shouldn’t, but I get a kick out of reading this.
Bump
“...Messi has risked further fury.”
‘Further’? ‘Fury’? Funny, there’s no elaboration on that.
Tells you the author is a liberal.
“How DARE he snub Saint Joe!!?!”
Is Messi even an American? If not, he may not feel any obligation at all. Let somebody else bunch up with all the has beens and still-wanna-bes.
Argentinian citizenship I believe.
What it look like Biden ?
That’s what I thought. He’s rich and famous already. Has no immediate need for any trinkets from the USA.
...fingers to the sky!
He knows it is of ZERO value...too bad the rest do not...yet.
What it look Like Joe Biden?
Giving Messi but not Cristiano Ronaldo is like giving a medal in the 1980s to Pepsi but not to Coke.
I was disappointed to see that Denzel Washington attended the ceremony. I thought he had a bit more sense than that.
I beg to differ. Messi is better than CR. Just like Coke is better than Pepsi.
Just out of curiosity, what did Messi do to deserve this award? Seems that nearly everyone else on the list has decades of contributions (whatever you may think of those contributions) to the country, to world peace and awareness, and to culture. Messi is still fairly new compared to the likes of Bono, Soros, Hillary, Denzel etc.
Ironically, Denzel played in a Spike Lee movie called “Inside Man” where he played a cop investigating the robbery of a very wealthy, elderly banker turned philanthropist who started his fortune back in the day by collaborating with the Nazis. Always thought that Nazi collaborator character was modeled after Soros. So this juxtaposition on the stage is a bit odd to me.
Do? Deserve?
Michael J. Fox? fFor his inspiring work on Back to the Future?
Magic Johnson? For his daunting purchase of a theater in Inglewood?
I thought Biden was only giving medals to left wingers. Mea culpa for wishing many on that list to cease breathing.
