McDonald's reported a surprise fall in sales in the April to June quarter - as customers cut down on trips to the fast food giant.
Americans placed fewer orders than a year ago - meaning sales were down by nearly one per cent. Globally, sales fell by a similar amount.
McDonald's saw fewer customers, but it said those who came spent more because of price increases.
It was the first sales decline since 2020 when the pandemic shuttered stores and millions stayed home. Profits also slumped by 12 percent.
Big price rises - including fan favorites like a Big Mac meal hitting $17.59 - are blamed for customers staying away.
'The biggest hit for McDonald's is the low-income consumer has really cut back on visits and that is more than offsetting the typical trade down [the chain] normally sees in tougher economic times,' said Edward Jones analyst Brian Yarbrough.
McDonald's results dovetail with comments last week from Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey, who said sales were slow in restaurants - an indication of fewer people eating out.
McDonald's also reported lower store traffic in China, France and the Middle East, where people have been boycotting McDonald´s because of a perception that it supports Israel in the war in Gaza.

That $18 is one of the main issues.
I had lunch at the 99. A chain restaurant out of Boston. I sat at the bar with a buddy. Had free popcorn, a diet Pepsi and a chicken roll up with a side of cole slaw for $18. The bartender served it and gave me a refill on the drink for free.
The price of fast food is now the same as food in a sit down restaurant. Fast food would sell IF it was under $10 for the same thing.
I can go across the street to Market Basket(supermarket). They will make me a large steak bomb for $6.99.

And I still haven’t forgotten how they sold off their Israeli franchise after it was discovered that they were giving free meals to IDF soldiers.

That was around five bucks when I was a teenager. Maybe less.
My kids are grown and on their own but we used to eat at mickeyD's occasionally. No way would I have paid those prices.
I dont go as I dont find it edible, but had to go for the grandkids recently. Went inside to order and there was no one in sight, not even a kiosk. Turns out you have to use an app to order this stuff. Took 10 minutes for someone to come to the counter to take my order.

We had a custom of stopping at the McDonald’s in Freeport, Maine coming home from vacation midcoast. I would get a Big Mac meal, wife whatever, and then “do the shops” which basically, for me, was just L. L. Bean. Other than that, I rarely go to Mickey D’s, probably less than once a year. It’s still a pretty good deal and once a year, it’s actually fun.
I don’t know about hard workers unless by that you mean working hard at giving white people a bad attitude.....because that’s mostly been my experience
The In-n-Out nearest me is doing a brisk business, drive through is out to the street and moving well. I get what I order, and the price is acceptable, and its very good chow!
The customer interactions are always pleasant and courteous.
When I worked at McDonald's in 1976, the Big Mac was made from two 1/10 pound patties.
I was just making a delivery to one of our local Mickey D's and saw the familiar box of frozen patties being stored in the freezer. Says they are 1/10 pound patties...still...
If you look at the older McDonald's ads they are selling a "meal" of one of their regular burgers, a small fry (the only size they used to have) and a 12 ounce soda (mostly ice) for under $1. That was seriously a meal...for an adult. They now call that a "Happy Meal" and feed it to pre-schoolers.
Our PERCEPTION of portion sizes has changed. We didn't used to eat as much.
Yeah, and every time go by a Chic FIL A the cars wrap around the block.....

To me everything at McDonalds tastes like chemicals. The only thing I like is McRib, Steak egg & cheese bagel and occasional fries.

For $6 I can get a 10 inch sandwich at my convenience store (WaWa) freshly made in front of me
Their single biggest customer was, young married female with children who once a week would stop in to have a breakfast.
It was probably her little treat. But when thing are tight financially those "little treats" are the first thing to go.
That sounds great! Do you put 2 eggs on one sandwich? Fried/steamed, or poached?
I loved the McRib. The tasty bun, the crisp pickles and onions and the tangy sauce.
Just throw away that nasty mystery meat and it’s all good.
Yes, fried in butter and the yolks should still be a little runny.
