Naturally occurring substance in pomegranates may improve treatment of Alzheimer's disease (Urolithin A)

A substance naturally occurring in pomegranates, strawberries and walnuts can improve memory and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, a new study concludes.

Forgetfulness, difficulty finding words and confusion about time and place. These are some of the most common symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

Now researchers have discovered that an ordinary fruit can help.

"Our study on mouse models with AD shows that urolithin A can alleviate memory problems and other consequences of dementia," says Vilhelm Bohr.

"Even though the study was conducted on mouse models, the prospects are positive. So far, research has shown promising results for the substance in the muscles, and clinical trials on humans are being planned," says Bohr.

The researchers previously discovered that a specific molecule, nicotinamide riboside (NAD supplement), plays a key role in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, as it actively helps remove damaged mitochondria from the brain.

"Many patients with neurodegenerative diseases experience mitochondrial dysfunction. This means that the brain has difficulties removing weak mitochondria, which thus accumulate and affect brain function. If you are able to stimulate the mitophagy process, removing weak mitochondria, you will see some very positive results," Bohr explains.

The results of the new study show that a substance found in pomegranates, urolithin A, removes weak mitochondria from the brain just as effectively as NAD supplement.

The researchers still don't know how much urolithin A is needed to improve memory and alleviate symptoms of Alzheimer's.

"We still cannot say anything conclusive about the dosage. But I imagine that it is more than a pomegranate a day. However, the substance is already available in pill form, and we are currently trying to find the right dosage," Bohr says.

He also hopes the substance can be used for preventive purposes with no significant side effects.

Actually, Urolithin A is NOT is any fruit. It is made by gut bacteria converting substances in pomegranates and a few other foods. Only 30-40% of people have these specific bacteria and you can’t eat enough pomegranates to equal what supplements can provide.

My wife and I have been taking Urolithin A for well over a year. I have posted on Urolithin A, before.

I bought some last week. I am getting forgetful and do search a bit for words. Written/oral communication has always been my strong suit, and it is frightening to go downhill in that regard.

A substance naturally occurring in pomegranates can improve the, you know, the thing.

What’s with some of the supplements costing $125 and others $35, with fewer capsules in the former? Anything to justify the far higher unit cost? Guess I’ll start reading up... I also wonder if it’s necessary to take both Urolithin and NAD or NAD precursor.

Forcing oneself to continuously learn complex concepts will help to develop new neural pathways. Make it a habit and begin right away.

The outlook on dementia is still grim as of 6 year ago, and that accounts for the latest research and practices available at the time in the best centers worldwide. Doubtful anything significant was discovered since then. More than happy to be told otherwise.

The brain has an amazing ability to rebuild its network, but that typically requires a demand of outcome.

Although I’m a believer in the best biological consumption habits which may include various supplements, painting rust doesn’t make the rust go away. And neither will a supplement make the dementia go away.

Agreed. Rust painting is quite good analogy but not even enough to describe this scam. It’s more like, lucrative rust painting on “mouse models” allowing rust to creep in more and forcing to buy more new game changer rust painting.

I am so sick and tired of the junk science which peddles miracle molecules while ignoring the real cause of the ‘rust’ which is carbohydrates and how metabollic diseases such as dementia can be rapidly reversed using the carnivore diet.

I argue with my Endocrinologist about using a statin drug for cholesterol issues. Statin drugs are definitely linked to memory loss….Anyone else wonder why Alzheimer’s disease is up with increased us of statin drugs. I Refuse to take it and my cholesterol has been at or around 230 for a few years.

Can you recommend a particular supplement, and where to get it?

I will argue that you do not forget, but rather the time for recall is sometimes longer than instantaneous.

Too bad no one can AFFORD that ‘POM’ juice that they sell in all the grocery stores. It’s about $6 for an 8 oz. bottle where I live!

Another weird fruit/veg/animal/sea creature where a brave person in History decided that the Pomegranate is something that they should eat!

Oh, you just eat the SEEDS? OK, whatever, Dude. ;)

P.S. Also, it’s nothing but carbs! Little to no real ‘nutrition’ in there.

"Anyone else wonder why Alzheimer’s disease is up with increased us of statin drugs."

Claude:

"Statins may reduce dementia risk: A 2018 meta-analysis of 31 studies involving over 3.3 million participants found that statin use was associated with a 15% reduced risk of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and non-Alzheimer's dementia. The risk reduction was greater with higher statin doses and longer duration of use. Similarly, a 2023 study on over 15,000 patients with Alzheimer's or mixed dementia found that statin use, especially simvastatin, was associated with slower cognitive decline over time compared to non-users."

It is also a commercial product(1 company selling) and expensive. I wouldn’t be surprised if the company sponsored the study

The NAD precursors don’t have any reliable studies showing they work

We get Urolithin A from Time Line Nutrition, called Mitopure. You can get it at a good discount around Black Friday on Amazon and throughout the year in a full year's order. It winds up between $70-$75 a month, with those discounts. Note that there have also been Flash sales on Amazon for 30+% off, but you need to be on Time Line's emails or pay close attention to Amazon sales.

Nestle sold the same Mitopure in its Celltrient line. They moved this line to Solgar, which Nestle also now owns. They may have other sales on it.

I first bought the Celltrient at a great discount on Ebay, as some sellers were selling stock with an expiration date only a few months away. I got these for around $25-$30 a month.

Time Line Nutrition has a deal with Truemed that will allow their doctors to prescribe Urolithin A to you. This is free and only requires describing test results or a prior doctor's evaluation of your health. I, too, got this done, in December.

The original Urolithin A available is Mitopure. It's made in Europe. Other manufacturers of Urolithin A now seem to exist, but the items I saw on Amazon a year or two ago looked hokey. It could be different, today.

May I ask what is your goal in taking Urolithin A? It can't be treatment of dementia, hardly. Prevention?

“The NAD precursors don’t have any reliable studies showing they work”

If these are in fact precursors why would they not be expected to result in the same effects as NAD itself (maybe more or less efficiently), studies or no studies?

It is for prevention of any issue that appears bound by mitochondria.

This includes a number of cancers and numerous other dysfunctional issues we build up.

Here are other threads that spoke to Urolithin A, and I have studies I never posted that also show benefits.
