Lots of stuff in anime is based on Ainu culture and folklore.

Not the Beach Episodes. That is just Japanese.

My mother’s mother’s mother’s mother was pure Ainu. She died before I was born, but we have a picture of her.

My mother’s mother’s mother’s father, whose last name was Siemsen, was the Danish consul in Vladivostok.

Their child, my mother’s mother’s mother was born in 1889, was very ashamed of the fact that she was half Ainu. She moved from Russia to China at the time of the Bolshevik revolution, and from China to America at the time of the Chinese Communist takeover. In America, she lived in a large (but partially unfinished) house on the banks of the Russian River in Rio Nido, California.

I remember her, and the house she lived in, vividly. She doted on her grandkids, especially me. She is buried at Fort Ross in California.

That's quite a family history! So glad you have memories of her.

I'm old enough to remember my father's grandmother. Born in Guilford County, North Carolina in 1880. She passed away in 1979. I was five. Many years later it finally dawned on me that I had met someone in my family who knew veterans from the Civil War, and had lived to see not just the first powered air flight but also man on the moon.

"The old days" aren't really that far away from us.

Iceland.

Technically they are all imports from Ireland and Scandinavia.

No native people at all.

The last place on earth to be settled. That we know of.

Just about anyone born in 1980 ran into someone from the 1800s, and people who were born before 1980, well, think about the old people you met or who held you or who yelled at you when you were a kid.

There is an argument for Hawaii but in Hawaiian legend they say there were other people there when they arrived.

Iceland is the only place we can be fairly confident of. At least as a major piece of land. There is probably some bit of land that is underwater except about four times a year when there is a really low tide but since no one could live there it does not count. At least in my book. (Just 9.95 at your local book store!)

When I lived in Japan, the Japanese didn’t like the mountain people who were not the same ugly;) Funny to hear them talk about Hairy Thick People - the Snaggle Toothed People of Plains were fierce warriors.
