Report Reveals Increasingly Desperate EV Dealers Slashing Prices In Bid To Boost Sales

According to a recent report out of the United Kingdom, increasingly desperate eclectic vehicle dealers have slashed the prices of their vehicles in an attempt to boost sales by massively ratcheting up discount deals. The attempt to stimulate sales comes despite massive government efforts to boost interest in EVs and limit sales of combustion-powered vehicles.

Such is what the UK financial website This Is Money reported in a recent expose on the state of the EV industry in the UK. According to its report, which cited market analysis by What Car?, dealerships have increased the average discount on an EV by a whopping 204 percent since January of 2023. The reason for those immensely steepened discounts has been sluggish sales.

According to that report, the discount on the average EV rose from 2.4 percent in January of 2023 to a massive 7.5 percent in January of 2024. That data came from What Car?’s New Car Deals service, and comes amidst a warning from a committee in the UK’s House of Lords that a “combination of higher purchase costs, insufficient charging infrastructure and mixed messaging” risks slowing EV adoption in Great Britain.

Commenting on what the committee found after extensive interviews, Baroness Parminter said, “The evidence we received shows the Government must do more to get people to adopt EVs. If it fails to heed our recommendations the UK won’t reap the significant benefits of better air quality and will lag in the slow lane for tackling climate change.”

In any case, the general impression from the report is that people are still more interested in combustion-powered vehicles than EVs. That appears to be confirmed by What Car? data showing that the aforementioned discounts on EVs have far outpaced the average discount for gas, diesel, and hybrid vehicles. Among those, the average discount rose by just 3.6 percent.

Some in the UK have taken to blaming “Mr. Bean” actor and car enthusiast Rowan Atkinson for slow EV adoption. One environmentalist group, for example, claimed, “One of the most damaging articles was a comment piece written by Rowan Atkinson in The Guardian which has been roundly debunked.” Whether or not Atkinson’s comments were legitimately debunked is debatable, but Thinktank continued: “Unfortunately, fact checks never reach the same breadth of audience as the original false claim, emphasising the need to ensure high editorial standards around the net zero transition.”

Atkinson, for his part, claimed that he was initially a strong proponent of EVs, but has increasingly felt “duped” by them because of their many shortcomings. Explaining those shortcomings, he said, “They’re absurdly heavy, huge amounts of energy are required to make them, and they are estimated to last only upwards of 10 years. It seems a perverse choice of hardware with which to lead the automobile’s fight against the climate crisis.”

Atkinson’s conclusion, one with which the environmentalists and EV proponents took particular umbrage, was, “Increasingly, I’m feeling that our honeymoon with electric cars is coming to an end, and that’s no bad thing.” As of now, it looks like the result of that will be increasing attempts to induce consumers to buy EVs, not a rethinking of a pro-EV strategy.

One issue with EVs left unnoted by Atkinson is that cold weather can leave their batteries drained and make them difficult to charge, as was seen when temperatures plummeted in Chicago. Check out a video showing that here:

You could not give me an EV for free. Their batteries are simply too dangerous and when they go bad the cost to replace them turns the car into a lawn ornament that is likely to burst into flames at any moment.

The Left just loves to find scapegoats for their failures. Poor Mr. Bean. He’ll probably be arrested once Labor takes over. And I don’t think he’ll do well in prison.

Remember when Henry Ford started selling ICE vehicles off the newly invented ‘assembly line’ for the Everyday Man back in 1903 and he had to give everyone a steep discount to buy them?

Don’t worry, the government will bail them out and raise taxes on “the people” to pay for it.

My requirements for buying EV:
1). Cheaper than the equivalent combustion engine model.
2). >600+ miles between charges.
3). Coupon for free replacement battery(parts and labor included).

Virtually no vehicle depreciates as quickly as an EV whatever the make.

It took a while, but most people now seem aware of the extreme negatives of EVs.
