John Wayne won a Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Actor. Upon accepting his Oscar, Wayne said, "Wow! If I'd known that, I'd have put that patch on 35 years earlier."
The title song sung by Glen Campbell, who co-starred in the movie, received nominations for both the Academy Award for Best Song and the Golden Globe.
One of my favorite actors, Strother Martin, gave another fine performance in the movie. How about this for a great John Wayne movie and almost theme. It also had an Oscar winning caliber performance by Strother Martin. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, the best western ever made.
I happened to see today that they did a re-make of this movie.
Why does Hollywood keep remaking good, old movies? Don’t they have any new ideas?
I watched that movie again a couple of weeks ago. It had been a while. I’d forgotten how good it was.
I had a little teeny-bopper crush on Glen Campbell. Had a few of his albums. He’s the reason I learned to play the guitar. Not nearly as well as he did, but I wasn’t bad.
Great message to the left: fill your hands you sob.
Cowboy bump.
I remember a Glen interview where he talked about Wayne complaining he wasn’t keeping up on horseback.
Glen said that Wayne purposefully put him on what Glen called a “pony”, and told Wayne he was doing the best he can. While Wayne is much bigger than Glen, Glen’s horse does look small. I think it sets up one of the last lines of the movie where Maddie comments on Rooster’s new horse - before he jumps the fence.
Glen was no stranger to a horse or any animal given his upbringings. They should have given him a bigger horse!
🤣 I was just going to post the same thing!
True Grit remake sucks.
Same with TRON Legacy.
Gargage.
I saw that movie in Radio City Music Hall in NYC when I was a kid.
The remake is closer to the book, which is a fantastic read by the way.
There are only a handful of people who can play the guitar better than Glen Campbell could.
The remake of True Grit by the Coen Bfos. was done quite a few years ago, and was quite good. MattDamon, Josh Brolin, Haylee Steinfeld.
One of the greatest guitarists of any era. It’s amazing how many famous guitar riffs on hit records of the 60s were actually being played by Glen sitting in as a session musician.
I wish Glen had just written the song for the movie and left it at that. His acting was really bad and brought down the quality of the movie. It’s no surprise he didn’t act again.
They don't seem to. Not only that, they don't seem to know about millions of great novels that could be made into movies. Then look: The writers strike because they aren't getting enough money for retread scripts.
He was mighty good.
The combination of Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb was historic. Like Bacharach and Warwick.
Glen didn’t write True Grit. Glen didn’t write many songs because he could barely read or write music. As for his acting, that’s a matter of opinion.
His acting in True Grit was pretty bad. It was the first and last time he ever worked as an actor. In the late 50’s -60’s westerns we’re losing their box office appeal so John Wayne brought on Glen for commercial reasons. He did the same thing with Ricky Nelson in Rio Bravo but Ricky was also an experienced actor as well as a popular singer.
