The number of dairy cows killed Monday by smoke and fire has not yet been confirmed by officials, but early estimates number in the thousands
One person is in critical condition and thousands of cows are believed to have been killed in an explosion and fire at a dairy farm in the Texas Panhandle Monday night.
The explosion happened at the Southfork Dairy Farm in Dimmitt at about 7:30 p.m. According to KCBD-TV in Lubbock, a worker was trapped inside the milking facility and was hospitalized in critical condition after being rescued by first responders.
No other injuries to employees were reported.
KCBD reported the fire from the explosion is believed to have spread through the dairy building and into the dairy cow holding pens. While the number of cows killed in the fire has not been confirmed, preliminary reports online indicate thousands of dairy cows may have been killed by fire and smoke.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, though Castro County Sheriff Sal Rivera told KCBD that early speculation is that methane may have been ignited by overheating electrical equipment used to suck out waste from the holding pens.
The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
Dimmitt is in Castro County and is roughly halfway between Lubbock and Amarillo, west of Tulia.
“Sis Boom Bah!”
That would be exploding sheep.
More like “Sis Boom Moo!”
Sorry...
Cow tipping...........
one of the all-time great Carnac jokes....awesome.
bummer...i love cows...man.
Initial reports say that upwards of 18,000 cattle were lost in the fire.
That will take years to replace.............
This is right at 50 ACRES under roof. 2.1 million square feet.
The spread is attributed to the cross flow ventilation of the barn driven by fans.
Right. It is a steel and concrete facility with feed bunkers of usually damp feed material. I guess it was straw that made all that black smoke of course. yup.
This is a strange.
Manure pit
Typically, the mixture is composed of about 60 percent methane and 40 percent carbon dioxide regardless of the type of waste. Pure methane has heat value of about 1,000 Btu per cubic foot, so we can expect the methane-carbon dioxide mixture to have a heat value of about 600 Btu per cubic foot.
This was clearly an accident.
That is what the media says.
We should believe them.
We trusted them during Covid.
We trusted them for the solution to Covid.
We trusted them with Jan 6th.
We must also trust them here.../s
One hell of a BBQ!................
There have been many attempts to take advantage of cow manure using anaerobic digestion to produce methane. At small scale it can be done sort of economically but at industrial scale it's a nightmare.
The best thing IMHO is to haul liquefied manure in tankers to spread on fields as a terrific fertilizer. I'll bet there are a lot of happy cotton farmers with irrigated fields in that county. Bigger yields and faster growing.

A facility that large and with so many dairy cattle is probably a member of a dairy co-operative.
Expect a regional shortage of dairy products in the Castro County and surrounding areas.
Systems fail.
Massive systems fail massively.
1. Where was PETA or ALF?
2. How soon before libs blame the methane in cow farts?
There might have been a dairy methane digester responsible for this. Time will tell.
“Nobody needs that many high-capacity cows!”
Anyone else tired of this yet? #chinesesaboteurs
It' s a dairy farm for cripes sake.
I'm going with arson. But I'm a cynic.
