If you're over 40, regular exercise may not only keep you fit—it might keep you out of the hospital, too, a large new study suggests.
Researchers found that among nearly 82,000 British adults, those who regularly exercised were less likely to be hospitalized for various health conditions in the coming years. The list included such common ills as pneumonia, stroke, diabetes complications and severe urinary tract infections.
The findings suggest that if middle-aged and older people added just 20 minutes of exercise to their daily routine, they could cut the risk of those hospitalizations by anywhere from 4% to 23% over seven years.
Researchers focused on nearly 82,000 participants between the ages of 42 and 78 who spent a week wearing wrist monitors that recorded their physical activity. They looked at the relationship between those activity levels and participants' odds of being hospitalized in the coming years.
After roughly seven years, more than 48,000 study participants did end up in the hospital, for a host of reasons. When it came to nine of those health issues, though, people who were more physically active had lower risks.
The big nine were gallbladder disease, UTIs, blood clots, stroke, diabetes complications, pneumonia, iron-deficiency anemia, colon polyps and diverticular disease (where small "pouches" form in the wall of the colon).
The researchers estimate that it takes only an extra 20 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous cardio each day to curb the odds of being hospitalized for the nine conditions the study identified. That ranged from a 4% dip in the risk of hospitalization for colon polyps to a 23% drop in the chances of landing in the hospital due to diabetes.

Everybody should have two streams of exercise to do during the day.
A main workout, whether it be weights or calisthenics or swimming or something.
Then they should have a calisthenics program they can do in bits in pieces just to keep limber.
How many cigarettes/cups of coffee equal 20 minutes of exercise?
Finally started eating healthy and exercising and wow it has made a difference. Shoulder pain is getting better as the shoulder muscles are toned. Got more energy. Don't feel the need for a nap.
Had to get painful before I turned it around though. Probably should have started earlier.
3 beers I believe
I’m 79...Thye shoulder impingement finally got me. I start therapy Monday.
Does exercise make you healthier or does being healthier lead to more exercise?
Does that mean that I can run away fast enough that they can’t catch me?
Question... Does that include mental hospitals?
🤪

Hope therapy works for you. I was cheap and just watched YouTube videos to figure out how to recover. Bought a 20 dollar exercise band, but so far thats the only expense.
And a doughnut…..
“I’m 79...Thye shoulder impingement finally got me. I start therapy Monday.”
I’m 84 my wife will soon be 83.
Therapy with our shoulders is critical to keep the scar tissue at a minimum and our muscles able to do the job.
It seem like for my wife and I, we need to do the shoulder reps at minimum of 3-4 times a week and just while walking.
Have your PT show you exercises while
Walking, standing, sitting, by a dresser and in bed.
I try to walk a mile per day and use the walking sticks to keep my shoulder able to move without pain.
20 minutes is a long time.
The pain is pretty much gone now but range of motion needs to be corrected. Thanks for the hints.
I can’t spare 20 minutes away from the video games and tv. This is totally unreasonable.
Well, I’m 70 and doing 2 hours a day.
I’m sure they meant 2 minutes. Who would exercise for a whole 20 minutes?
Diet plays a part too. People who exercise eat better. This one factor study is flawed.
I get so bored after ten minutes.
