NATIONAL KETO DAY

National Keto Day hits January 5th with an approach to transforming our health. Recent research suggests the high-fat, low-carb ketogenic or ‘keto’ diet offers a number of benefits.

#NationalKetoDay

Benefits

Two of the most significant perks seen with the keto diet are weight loss and healthy blood sugar support. In fact, studies have shown improved glycemic control for those with type 2 diabetes while adhering to a ketogenic diet.

Other health benefits of a keto diet may include healthy cholesterol and blood pressure support. It may also be beneficial for those with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Keto Plan

How does the diet work? By eliminating carbohydrates, your body will use up its store of glycogen first. Then it will move into ketosis and begin burning fat.

Primarily, a keto diet consists of healthy fats, like eggs, avocado, olive oil, and sustainably-raised meat. Nuts, seeds, dairy, and low-carbohydrate vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, and green peppers are also easy to incorporate. Coconut oil, grass-fed butter, and ghee add fat and flavor to a keto diet. Occasionally, small servings of berries are added to the menu.

Eliminate these foods if you are considering a keto diet:

sweets, sugar, sodas, baked goods

grains, whole grains, and starches

fruits, starchy vegetables

hydrogenated oils, vegetable oil

diet foods, including low sugar, sugar-free, low-fat foods

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL KETO DAY

National Keto Day Logo

If you’re considering the keto approach to a healthier lifestyle, or are already engaged in it, whip up your best keto meal or snack, and post a pic of it to Instagram using the hashtag #NationalKetoDay. For every post, The Vitamin Shoppe will donate $5 to Blessings in a Backpack, a non-profit organization that provides food on weekends to elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry.

You can also stop into your local The Vitamin Shoppe the weekend of the 5th to sample various keto products for free. Make sure to follow @vitaminshoppe on Instagram for more details!

NATIONAL KETO DAY HISTORY

The Vitamin Shoppe founded National Keto Day on January 5, 2019, to educate and bring awareness to the ketogenic diet and further highlight the many health benefits a keto lifestyle offers.

In 2019, the Registrar at National Day Calendar® proclaimed National Keto Day to be observed annually on January 5th.

My son did this diet and lost 50 lbs. I’ve always thought this diet was easier for men, although a colleague’s daughter lost 80 lbs. on the Keto diet. (both mid-20’s). Not sure if she’s kept it off.

Son said this diet is extremely difficult for him to keep up and he’s struggling with his weight loss, and has fortunately been able to keep the vast majority of the weight off - he said with great effort.

Yep. Some years back I went on the Atkins Diet’s “induction” plan, which is essentially the keto diet. I lost 50-60 lbs. as if by magic, and it was easy. I’ve kept it off with only occasional deviations for over 20 years. If I want to lose a few pounds, I simply drop all carbs / sugars for a couple of weeks.

Thanks for that link! I’ve already actually taken advantage of the Papa John’s “bowls” s couple of times before, which are actually pretty good and lot more affordable than a full crust pizza as well.

“He suggested I only eat an egg or two in then morning, an avocado for lunch, and piece of fish or chicken for dinner, on most nights.”

That’s harsh! I lost 25 pounds doing low carb (I didn’t know it was called “keto” until recently). I was always full.

Eggs with cheese and bacon in the morning. No limit on quantity.

Meat (fish, steak, hamburger, poultry) with green veggie(s) later in the day. No limit on quantity. I recently found at Walmart “Keto” hot dog and hamburger buns.

Snacks like walnuts, almonds, peanut butter. No limit on quantity.

Ordering fajitas (Chili’s are the best!) at a restaurant are great. Eat everything — guacamole, salsa, etc. — but the tortillas.

I did miss potatoes (my favorite food), rice, crackers, pasta. Have read, and believe it’s true, that if you cook those things, then refrigerate them for several hours (varied between 12-24 hours), it reduces carbs by about half. Haven’t tried it, but I will. Potato salad, sounds great!

Anyhow, FWIW...

Thank you! It is pretty harsh, but right now due to my hernia (they believe, after lots of tests), my stomach instantly blows up like a basketball whenever I eat anything, so actually the hunger is less of a nuisance than than that is.

Eggs have always been one of my very favorite foods, and what I’ve almost always had for breakfast, which is most every day.

Guacamole, especially with Pico de Gallo mixed in, has always been a favorite as well. Fish, shrimp and chicken, all on my favorites list. So I won’t be suffering much, thankfully.

Good point on the nuts. I love walnuts and pecans. Just ate a can of cashews over Christmas.

Thanks again! Always enjoy reading your posts, very informative and politically sound. With a little up frontness mixed in!

Ah ... I didn’t know the reason for your doctor’s recommendation. A hernia would be a different reason for his suggestion.

Mine was to have a better outcome on my blood sugar, not to lose weight. I was surprised that I lost so much weight. Surprisingly, it didn’t impact the blood sugar levels. Go figure ...

I don’t know much about blood sugar, except that Chromium Picolinate Is a supplement (which I prefer to try first) that may help. I only found that out when researching it as it was an additive in a product I was taking for other reasons.

Maybe one of those diets designed to reduce/cure Diabetes Type II, if you haven’t tried that yet, but I think they are mostly just non-carb, which you’ve already tried, but maybe there’s a certain variation that might work.

Those low carb mission tortillas make a great thin pizza crust.

Do that eventually after you get some weight drop at first.

And when you eat Keto the first week will be hard depressing and then all of a sudden, it’s as if your body starts craving the right foods for you and all those donuts and cookies etc. will actually become rather unappealing….like poison.

Bodybuilders have followed a similar program for decades. This is not new. When I was working out, I followed the Adkins Diet which is similar. I found by adding more fats (saturated or not), I built bigger. People were amazed because I have a small frame.

I've since stopped pumping iron, but get on the treadmill twice a week. That keeps my energy level up being 73 and other parts working...haha.

Have you ever checked into Dr. Jason Fung's program for reversing diabetes?   He basically recommends following a low-carb (ketoish) diet, and including choosing to do one of various possible types of fasting in tandem with that, over time.

I know someone with diabetes who started following his program, and eventually got off all diabetes meds.

Dr. Fung has a bunch of videos about this approach on youtube, as well as this book.

You might want to check him out.

“That sounds low sugar as well as low carb”

Definitely. Sugar was out. Giving up potatoes was harder than giving up sugar.
