A reduction in dietary carbohydrates improved both symptoms and objective measurements of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in a randomized controlled trial.
"The findings support a recommendation for patients suffering from GERD to reduce their simple sugar intake," said Heidi Silver, RD, MS, Ph.D.
Silver and her colleagues had made a serendipitous discovery in a previous diet intervention study that provided study participants with a moderately high fat, lower carbohydrate diet for 16 weeks. At the nine-week timepoint, all the participants who had GERD were no longer having symptoms and had discontinued taking their GERD medications.
To study the effects of carbohydrates on GERD, Silver and her colleagues conducted a randomized controlled trial in which 98 veterans with GERD were divided into four dietary intervention groups that varied in the amount and type of carbohydrates (high total/high simple; high total/low simple; low total/high simple; low total/low simple).
The researchers used 24-hour pH monitoring (via intranasal catheter) to measure esophageal acid exposure time and number of reflux episodes.
All the carbohydrate modification groups had improvements in GERD symptoms after nine weeks. In addition, participants reported a significant decrease in the use of over-the-counter medications, which patients often use because prescription GERD medications are not completely effective, Silver said.
For the pH monitoring results, the high total/low simple carb group and the low total/high simple carb group had significant reductions in acid exposure time and total number of reflux episodes during the 24-hour monitoring period. Unexpectedly, the low total/low simple carb group, which the researchers expected to have the largest impact, did not differ significantly from the control group.
Overall, the study findings support a recommendation that patients with GERD reduce their intake of simple sugars.

Now that sounds like fun!
Great finding, CM.
I have GERD really bad, somehow connected to a hiatal hernia that I developed
Carbs don’t really seem to affect me as much as specific foods.
Tomatoes and tomato based sauces are the worst
Ice cream (milk doesn’t seem to have the same effect)
Processed meat within two hours of laying down
The supposed only cures are cut off your esophagus above stomach, jamb the esophagus further into stomach and stitch it back up.
Or put a bracelet of magnets around esophagus above stomach that keep the tube tight. I’m thinking I’ll get the bracelet but would love to hear from anyone who has had a procedure!
I will try that!
Thank you very much!
I’m on two prescriptions and still will often need a shot of Pepto and a Zantac in the middle of the night.
It has affected my vocal cords now so it starting to piss me off!
GERD is a side effect of overlapping medical conditions and doing anything simply to ameliorate symptoms of GERD is as foolish as taking pain medication for cancer. You must resolve each of the conditions contributing to GERD and it will reconcile of its own accord.
I know. Been there. Btw, PPIs are POISON.
AMA board-certified MDs are idiots in this realm and anyone suffering GERD should consult both with their pharmacist - if it’s medication-induced - and a naturopath.
Remember: So-called ‘doctors’ thought stomach ulcers were caused by stress not so long ago and the system persecuted/ridiculed the one doctor who found the cause and the cure for 20 years before finally acknowledging his achievement with the Nobel Prize.
Many people will suffer & die before the system stops playing pharmaceutical bingo with peoples’ lives.
The choice to stop playing lies not with the doctor, but the patient.
I was offered the op to remake the esophagus but the surgeon advised there is a 5% failure rate which can make things worse. Quite high it seems to me.
Especially as a gastroscopy found no hernia and the esophageal valve seemed to be functioning!
So I try to control it now with diet; only partially successful but in my case foods with Sulphites are definitely to be avoided.
And chocolate.
Tomato based sauces and processed meats are both likely to have sulphite-based preservatives.
been trying to do keto and I can honestly say I've not had pasta, potatoes, or rice nor juice nor cereal since the middle of July....I fudged on bread 2-3 times and some wedding cookies and cake, but otherwise, not much sweet stuff....
by Blood sugar definately better and I have lost a few pounds but it doesn't melt off like they all claim.
you might research apple cider vinegar too....I take the capsules....but its supposed to help stomach problems.
GERD leads to Barrett’s Esophagus which leads to esophageal cancer which has about a 20% 5 year survival rate. The surgery for an esophagectomy is a really big deal, requiring the surgeon to go through your back and through your belly. Mine took 11 hours. There is another technique that goes down behind the heart via the neck and works the front through a ten inch incision through your belly.
You don’t want esophageal cancer. Do whatever you need to do to deal with the GERD and stop the erosion. And involve a gastrointerologist and take real medicines.
Thanks...switched from dexilant to pantoprazole for my gerd.
You should generally always feel like you are not hungry when the lower carb approach is working well.
Well said.
Of course it works. We know the culprits of acid reflux and none of them are carbs.

Unfortunately, I’ve been Keto for years and it hasn’t solved my GERD. Reduced it perhaps. maybe. But if so, not by much. Lots of other benefits and I plan to be Keto-almost-Carnivore for the rest of my life, but it didn’t help my GERD.
Odd as it sounds, if I feel it coming on, sometimes taking Ox Bile helps. Seems to be related to consuming too much fat and my body struggling to process it. Not as a regular supplement, mind you. Just when I feel GERD coming on.
