Coal is re-emerging as a key source of energy for European countries racing to replace increasingly scarce natural gas as Moscow shuts off key pipeline flows.
Europe is caught in a worsening energy crisis as Russia uses its energy exports to retaliate against sanctions. So countries like Germany are turning to coal to secure energy supplies before winter hits.
Power generation using coal has shot up over 20% in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the UK together since last year, Rystad Energy data shows. European countries have increased coal consumption this year.
"Coal is definitely making a comeback, with skyrocketing natural gas prices and drought," Ole Hvalbye, an analyst at Swedish bank SEB, told Insider. "Now it is all about surviving the winter."
Here, analysts lay out the factors shaping the appetite and market for coal - and whether they mean soaring prices for the fossil fuel will keep climbing.
Soaring natural gas prices
Moscow's drumbeat of disruptions to flows has sent European natural gas prices up 300% this year, and to record highs in August.
That has prompted power companies in Austria, the Netherlands and Italy to eye the use of coal again. German utility giant Uniper has revived a mothballed coal-fueled plant until April 2023.

Leftist mismanagement and lack of planning beyond continuous virtue signaling, will lead any country into the Dark Ages.
They’re reviving coal-fired plants. Cutting down forests for timber to burn. What’s next? Peat bogs for fuel? Candles for light?
The bizness channel guys have had stories lately about the Krautz mowing down stretches of the black forest for firewood. Who knew they still had wood stoves? But you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet. Wait until they start quoting prices for whale oil on the commodity exchanges. Captain Ahab will be back in bizness. And the price of lye will be up since they’ll be making soap out of beef fat again?
The problem with trying to cut firewood now is that it will be too green to burn well.
It needs to season for almost a year to burn most efficiently.
They are not going to have the time to season the firewood properly.
Didn’t they hear the UN’s orders?! No fossil fuels no matter what!
Hi ho
How DARE you not sell us energy just because we are waging a war against you !
Burn coal
Pay the toll
Trump is having the last laugh.
(Coal)
How dare they!!!
Our Propane, which we use for heating and cooking, DOUBLED in price from last season. $800 to $1,600.00!
Glad I held on to (expensive, efficient) electric space heaters that I used before we replaced the heating and A/C system in ‘This Old House’ a few years ago.
Our tank is full as we go into Winter. The guy who delivers to us grew up in our house, so he treats us like Royalty. He brought his Mom and his kids to tour the farm summer before last. Mom cried when she saw all the improvements Beau has made to the place since the early 80’s.:)
We’ll survive. Others around the world will NOT be so lucky. :(
Like the Cheshire Cat!!
I feel sorry for a lot of you guys up north, I’m looking forward to turning the A/C off by the end of this month and enjoying a beautiful Arizona fall/winter
Soros bought a lot of coal companies / reserves at rock bottom prices? What a coincidence!
the dining room furniture is seasoned
so is the wife’s curio cabinet if you are suicidal
let’s all go to Arizona and stay at Jeffs place. We can live off of rattlesnake meat and peccaries and drink Jeffs mescal and tequila. It sounds like a beautiful fall/winter plan.
We only ran our AC for a few days this summer.
It’s a trade off, which is why so many people are snowbirds.
Boy, was Trump right! I hope, but doubt, our fearless morons are paying attention.
