Record-setting quantum entanglement connects two atoms across 20 miles

Researchers in Germany have demonstrated quantum entanglement of two atoms separated by 33 km (20.5 miles) of fiber optics. This is a record distance for this kind of communication and marks a breakthrough towards a fast and secure quantum internet.

Quantum entanglement is the uncanny phenomenon where two particles can become so inextricably linked that examining one can tell you about the state of the other. Stranger still, changing something about one particle will instantly alter its partner, no matter how far apart they are. That leads to the unsettling implication that information is being “teleported” faster than the speed of light, an idea that was too much for even Einstein, who famously described it as “spooky action at a distance.”

Despite its apparent impossibility, quantum entanglement has been consistently demonstrated in experiments for decades, with scientists taking advantage of its bizarre nature to quickly transmit data over long distances. And in the new study, researchers from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU) and Saarland University have now broken a distance record for quantum entanglement between two atoms over fiber optics.

In their experiments, the team entangled two rubidium atoms kept in optical traps in two different buildings on the LMU campus. They were separated by 700 m (2,297 ft) of fiber optics, which was extended out to 33 km with extra spools of cable. Each atom was excited with a laser pulse, which causes it to emit a photon that’s quantum entangled with the atom.

The photons are then sent down the fiber optic cables to meet at a receiving station in the middle. There, the photons undergo a joint measurement, which entangles them – and because they’re each already entangled with their own atom, the two atoms become entangled with each other as well.

So does this mean that I can observe Biden stupidity faster than light once CNN adopts this as their new transmission method?

Interesting! Wonder if this could eventually lead to instant communications over large distances, as in between Mars - Earth for example.

So they monitored two separate distinct atoms?

Suuuure they did.

Equally as important as using quantum entanglement for communication is the undeniable fact that such communication will be inherently secure. If one particle can only communicate to its paired particle then the communication cannot be intercepted or monitored.

Which is going to be very bad news for the surveillance state.

"That leads to the unsettling implication that information is being “teleported” faster than the speed of light"

The article is misleading because there is no instantaneous transfer of information, only quantum state. They both have to be observed first to know their quantum state as a whole, and this occurs at or below the speed of light.

The technology to observe individual atoms is about 70 years old

If a quantum state is detectable as a 1 or a 0 then information is being transmitted.

But you have to know the entangled pair’s quantum state as a whole to even know that they are still entangled, and not just random. It’s like the pair are able to communicate instantly, but we are not allowed to see it. Spooky still, but doesn’t violate special relativity.

If photons stay entangled with their emitting atoms, your quantum states become slightly entangled with millions of stars via billion-year-old starlight, and the stars with you going back in time. At the quantum level, time and space is an illusion.

Years ago, in the 90’s, I had an idea for a quantum-like communications experimental device.

It would require a ‘perfect’ diamond which was rare at the time, but can be easily manufactured in labs nowadays.

Take the diamond and split it into two exact halves. Since diamond exhibits ‘perfect cleavage’ this should not be difficult.

Polish the two diamonds to as near identical as you can get them.

Then take each diamond and immerse them in a cryonic chiller, liquid nitrogen or similar, and separate them by several miles.

Have attached to the diamonds wires that can be pulsed with a digital code, as a transmitter and receiver.

Send a random sequence of pulses at one diamond and see if they can be detected at the other diamond several miles away.

If Quantum Entanglement is ‘a thing’, then since the diamonds were created simultaneously and from the same crystal, then they should react to each other being pulsed...................

Creating an ansible. An ansible is a category of fictional devices or technology capable of near-instantaneous or faster-than-light communication.
