The academy's 9,000 members had been 'completely split' on the decision
There were 'hundreds of WhatsApp groups' where they were arguing over it
Smith slapped host Chris Rock on March 27 for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head
He later won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in King Richard
Smith apologized for the violence, and Jada said she wished he hadn't slapped Rock
Rock has been quiet on the controversy, saying only that he was 'processing' it
Hollywood was split on whether or not the actor should get to keep his award

Chris Rock chose not to press charges.
It’s not like he lost all his millions, had a major medical problem, or even suffered legal consequences for a criminal act.
And per above, at least he has his wife. 😳
Good thing he’s not white, huh?
Did Chris Rock face any punishment for insulting Smith’s wife?
Never feel sorry for a multi-millionaire.
They can figure out, hire the talent for, or buy off, any problems.
Friggin hypocrisy. And Smith can't even act. Neither can rock, but that's beside the point.
Respectfully, the concept of any right to own private property is on its way in the next few decades to becoming very old-fashioned. (/snort)
Meh. I won’t watch one way or another. He’s an actor. It’s not that important. He doesn’t save lives, produce goods, build things, sell things, etc. He is a component of the entertainment industry, an industry that arguably does more harm than good. I am more easily entertained by stupid short videos done by enterprising citizens than 99% of Hollywood “products”.
Does the victim in an assault need to press charges in order for the police to act? I thought a violent crime speaks for itself.
I wonder if there are any Will Smith statues that can be torn down. The pigeons of public opinion would have one less roosting place.
Maybe he can get DJ Jazzy Jeff to go in his place.
Needs something more...
How about “Attack of the 50’ Karens”?
He resigned from the academy, so this isn’t really “brave” on the academy’s part.
They let Harvey Weinstein keep his Oscars, and what he did was far worse, so this sounds about right for these people. That punishment is a joke, but what else can they do? They can’t kick him out of SAG, that’s a different organization completely...
if Polanski can keep his after the unfortunate rape of a young lady, why not??
“He’d be sitting in jail right now if he were Caucasian”
Smith was not arrested because Rock chose not to press charges.
Who cares about the life and times of these arrogant jerks?
We are pleased to inform you that you have won the 2nd Place Award from the Most Enlightening Tagline Committee.
It was a very close contest with the lst Place winner simply inserting the words, "given a cell phone and" after the words "illegal aliens are".
We encourage you to continue with your efforts and wish you the best of luck in the future.
- Tagline Awards Committee
Thank you for this award.
Can I slap you now?.....................
In Calif where I live, there’s a law that says if an officer sees an assault or finds evidence of one, like a wound or even a red mark, they are obligated to arrest the alleged offender whether the victim wants to press charges or not. It does not matter.
It was put in place so victims of spousal abuse, which is rampant here by the way, can’t be threatened into silence by the abuser. That law has been in effect for decades that I know of. Now I ask you, why was Will Smith considered exempt from that law, when millions, including officers at the Oscars witnessed the incident? An assault plain as day. But they just shrug and treat the Hollywood baby like he’s above the law.
I’m sick and tired of this double standard crap! If it would have been a white guy going off on a black they would have fallen all over themselves to arrest him, whether he wanted to press charges or not.
