Associated Press All 3 defendants convicted of hate crimes in Arbery killing RUSS BYNUM Tue, February 22, 2022, 8:18 AM·5 min read BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — The three men convicted of murder in Ahmaud Arbery’s fatal shooting were found guilty of federal hate crimes Tuesday for violating Arbery’s civil rights and targeting him because he was Black.
The jury reached its decision after several hours of deliberation on the charges against father and son Greg and Travis McMichael and neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan.
During the trial, prosecutors showed roughly two dozen text messages and social media posts in which Travis McMichael and Bryan used racist slurs and made derogatory comments about Black people. The FBI wasn’t able to access Greg McMichael’s phone because it was encrypted.
The McMichaels grabbed guns and jumped in a pickup truck to pursue Arbery after seeing him running in their neighborhood outside the Georgia port city of Brunswick in February 2020. Bryan joined the pursuit in his own pickup and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael fatally shooting Arbery. The killing became part of a larger national reckoning on racial injustice after the graphic video leaked online two months later.
Defense attorneys contended the three didn’t chase and kill Arbery because of his race but acted on the earnest, though erroneous, suspicion that Arbery had committed crimes in their neighborhood.

Trashing the victim won’t help. These 3 guys chased down a black guy and shot him when he resisted their pursuit. Turns out, they chased down and killed a guy who had not stolen anything in their neighborhood.
If you are gonna dispense vigilante justice, you better be ready to pay the price when you are mistaken.
From memory - none of the alleged racist texts introduced at this trial refer to the Black male who was shot and killed.
If that is not correct, I will retract and apologize.
None of Mark Fuhrman’s racist stuff was about OJ either.
“Why this additional trial, other than to appease BLM?”
I agree, and “hate crime”? Aren’t all intentional killings motivated by hate?
They screwed up bigtime and ended up committing manslaughter.
At this point, what difference does it make. They shot him. He’s dead. Obviously, they didn’t like him or they wouldn’t have shot him.
Reminds me of an old Gunsmoke episode where two idiots come to town looking for Indians to annihilate because some sidewalk preacher said that would be a good idea. They attempt to hang a German man. He protests that he’s German, and one of them says, “I don’t care what tribe you belong to” and continue to string him up for hanging.
Not quite. Neighborhood homes were being burglarized. This punk was caught on several cameras just a wandering into construction sites that no trasspassing signs were clearly seen. The guys chased Aubrey, a person with a criminal past down and were placing him under citizen arrests, which is legal in GA. Aubrey resisted arrest and assaulted the father. He went after the shotgun the son was holding, grabbed the barrel to wrestle it away. Boom. Game over. The judge refused to allow the evidence that Aubrey was a career criminal out of fear of pissing off the BLM mob.
Travis was looking rather dejected after the verdict was read, but left the courtroom feeling very upbeat after his attorney told him he would be out of prison on the 15th of Juvember.
They already have.
A lot of crimes are rooted in greed or plain old stupidity, no element of hatred involved.
The problem with these video pictures is that lots of curious people walk through construction at various points. When I was a teenager, a neighborhood was being built adjacent to mine. I can’t tell you how many times we walked through them in various stages of completion. Was interesting. Cameras weren’t used then at these homes being built.
I bet there are videos of other people walking through this house. Let’s be fair and show them all.
LOL, scroll down a little. They have had supporters on FR since the case was first reported. I have no doubt that the actions of the three men in this case will be used in many CHL classes as an example of what not to do.
You won't catch any grief from me. Very early on this saga, I made the remark, "This is what happens when the forces of stupid collide."
Nothing I've seen, heard or read about this case has changed my mind.
There was not enough IQ between the four people involved to realize that if they didn't change the direction they were headed, they were going to end up where they were going. Up until about 5-10 seconds before the shooting, pretty much any one of the parties involved could have stepped back or stepped in and deescalated the situation. Not one of them chose to.
I disagree. If you take something that belongs to someone else without his permission, you are expressing contempt for that person and his property rights. Contempt is a form of hatred.
If you stupidly commit a crime at someone else’s bidding - like gang members do all the time - that’s an expression of hate for whoever you commit a crime against, or society in general, and of course hatred for yourself, because you value someone else’s influence over your own safety and wellbeing.
A crime committed accidentally - through a careless blunder - always gets a lesser sentence than one committed intentionally, but is not without penalty, of course - and this type of crime also involves contempt/hatred for innocent bystanders or unwitting participants.
I get that in this case, the hate crime charges would change the defendants’ sentences. But why shouldn’t murder be enough?
“Moral of the story: When chasing suspected perp in your pickup truck and shooting at him, do not exchange racist text messages.”
I think the OP said it best. Dumbety, dumb, dumb, DUMB.
Moral of the story
Don’t expect justice in a case like this one
Agreed, they should be swinging from a gallows.
So, he did not deserve to be shot for it.

Way back in the day, I and my young teen buddies hit construction sites looking for electrical socket punch outs. They worked very nicely in vending machines.
