KNOXVILLE, TN—A southern man was immediately rushed to the hospital yesterday after being served unsweetened tea, believing it to be sweet tea.
The ambulance arrived at Litton’s restaurant at approximately 2:15pm after being called by another restaurant patron. The man was found completely unresponsive due to an immense shock to his senses. According to others having lunch at the time, the man seemed to be perfectly normal and healthy, until he took a small sip of his drink.
“He was just sitting there enjoying his meal, until all of a sudden he just violently collapsed onto the floor, spilling food and drink everywhere!” said Opal Maynard, a Litton’s waitress. “Next thing we know he’s convulsing on the floor and foaming out the mouth.”
The man remained in critical condition until he arrived at the University of Tennessee Medical Center where doctors noticed his dangerously low blood sugar levels. Nurses quickly administered an IV of McDonald’s sweet tea, saving his life.
At this time, Fountain City PD does not suspect any foul play led to the man being served tea without any sugar. They have requested that the restaurant update their beverage labeling and have instructed them to add an extra bag of granulated sugar to their tea per mix, just to be safe.
The individual is expected to make a full recovery and has already returned to drinking tea the proper way, so sweet you can chew it.

Me, too....Read part of it then went back to the beginning to reread...and spotted it...oh no...the BEE.
When We moved to Houston from Old Bridge,NJ back in 1969 we stayed in a hotel while Dad was at the Intergalactic Airport during construction supervising the AA section and searching for a house..
At breakfast the first morning Dad ordered Tea, Mom Coffee and myself OJ. The Waitress brings the drinks and sets down Mom’s coffee and then a glass of Iced Tea to Dad. He’s got this look on His face like WTF IS THIS!! He says I meant Hot Tea and the Waitress says I’m sorry I’ll be right back Sir. When She came back She told Us that down South you need to specifically ask for Hot Tea or your getting Iced Tea. Even at Breakfast.
The table also had a 1 hole shaker bottle that had Simple Syrup to sweeten your Iced Tea with instead of trying to get sugar to dissolve in the Iced Tea. I’ve noticed that that’s not as common as it used to be.
Just the beginning of the learning and transitions of being Yankee’s in the South. We eventually made Damned Yankee status when they realized We were staying.
Adding sugar to the unsweetened tea did not revive the man.
...I have often said that it the Union’s forces could have captured the Confederacy’s supplies of sweet tea and air conditioners, the (mis-named...) American Civil War would have been over in short order....!!!
Fake News! I’ve been drinking unsweetened tea for decades! Only problem is finding it in the Oneonta Alabama Walmart!
“OK, you had me until I saw it was The Bee.”
The Bee stings me more often than I’ll otherwise admit. Often so, it’s the National Enquirer of hard news.
I wish I liked tea more.
