America has two paths before it—the path of fear and neuroses versus the path of courage and mental health—a choice it must make sooner rather than later.
America’s bipolar approaches to COVID—with one side seeking totalitarianism, health paranoia, and division, and the other side seeking personal liberty—remind us that the lessons of history are not easily learned. If we are to return to a normal America, one that encourages people to be mentally resilient when it comes to their physical health and is predicated upon health autonomy, we have very little time to stop the modern-day American despots.
The 20th century was defined, in significant part, by despotic leaders implementing propaganda campaigns to vilify certain groups of people deemed dirty or diseased. The despots didn’t accomplish these campaigns at once but, instead, did so slowly, by conditioning one group of people to believe their ills were caused by another group of people, while conditioning that second group of people to accept increasing levels of human rights violations. Leaders and governments, often working with the healthcare community, carried out campaigns to divide nations and eradicate those deemed “unclean” for the country’s “welfare” and the “future good.”
Today, the same divisive, unrelenting propaganda tactics that past fascists and tyrants used are producing a divided world and prompting actions by some that border on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). What was once considered hypochondriac behavior—masking, social distancing, and repeated hand washing—has become normalized. It identifies the good citizen, even in the face of a waning, weakened virus, heavily mutated from its original strain and far less deadly.

Last night, me and the family went to see a musical Christmas show in a tightly packed theater in downtown Savannah. Only a handful of masks seen. No fear seen in this crowd.

We had a pre show dinner at Vic’s on the River, a completely normal dining experience.
Fear worked. Covid will be followed by something else. It’s all about seizing power while we are preoccupied.
BTW fear works.
It shuts down your ability to think rationally.
That is why if you get lost the first rule is: DO NOT PANIC.
That’s how people get even more lost.
They take off in all directions without really paying attention what they are doing.

this ‘pandemic’ equals the drumbeating CNN did concerning going to war.
i am a member of the 1975 military group who suffered through swine flu. there was no woo-woo. the next year, when that flu ran through the public, we did not exist!
so, now today, for me, its no woo-woo.

We ran head first into this yesterday. We were planning on travelling over the holidays to visit family. Were. Now it is a definite maybe. Apparently some of the relatives at our destination have completely bought into the pandemic hype. They are horrified at the thought of being in the same room with us un-vaccinated types. They asked, more like demanded, through the family Matriarch (don’t even have the guts to call us directly) that we at least wear masks and social distance indoors when they are there. I told the Matriarch we can make it simple, either we won’t come at all, or we come and live our lives as we choose. If the people of the Tharn are too afraid to visit with us, that is on them. I won’t play to their fears.
I believe you are right. The power-mongers have tried various things in the past with uneven success. Remember:
Pollution was going to kill us all.
Ozone depletion was going to kill us all.
Nuclear winter was going to kill us all.
Global warming was going to kill us all.
Anthropomorphic (ie. man-caused) global warming was going to kill us all.
Screw it, just call it "climate change" is going to kill us all.
Covid is going to kill us all.
Variant {semi-random Greek alphabet letter} is going to kill us all.
The un-vaccinated are going to kill us all.
