With prices creeping up, more Americans are turning to dollar stores
Stamford Advocate ^ | Aug. 20, 2021 | Abha Bhattarai , The Washington Post

Kyle Dishman can't afford to shop at the local grocery store anymore. Instead he goes to Dollar General, where he can make $40 stretch into a week's worth of groceries and the occasional can of motor oil for his Chrysler 300.

He sticks with pasta, frozen pizza and canned vegetables, fully aware that "any food you can buy for only $1 is not the greatest for you." But Dishman says prices have gone up so much that he's started rationing his food.

"When you only have a certain amount to spend, it's like, why not just go to the dollar store?" he said.

A growing number of Americans are relying on dollar stores for everyday needs, especially groceries, as the coronavirus pandemic drags into its 18th month. Chains such as Dollar General and Dollar Tree are reporting blockbuster sales and profits, and proliferating so quickly that some U.S. cities want to limit their growth. The 1,650 dollar stores expected to open this year represent nearly half of all new national retail openings, according to Coresight Research.

Dollar General is not the same kind of store as a store that sells everything for $1.

It wasn’t there an article here yesterday that dollar stores were a scam and the markup and the margins are much higher at dollar stores than regular supermarkets?

That is pretty much not true brother

Lettuce and other produce are 50% to 70% cheaper at a dollar store then typical named brand stores

A simple hedonic adjustment. There is no inflation.

Can’t we take big plastic garbage bags and go to regular stores and high end luxury ones and walk out with everything free as the persons of color do? No suspects.

Oh yeah, I forgot. We’re the ones who work at honest occupations, pay taxes and act responsibly. And the reason for that is, uh, the reason is....

Note: My dear wife has many times said “At least you stayed out of prison.” That is true.

For the same amount of lettuce on an Apple’s to Apple’s basis? I don’t really know but it would be interesting to see somebody do a comparison.

I went to a dollar store a couple of weeks ago, and the owner of a local convenience store was buying cases of things to mark up and sell in his store a couple of miles away. Temped got see what some of those Mark-ups look like.

There is a Dollar Tree at Cambrian Plaza that I think I’ve only been there once or twice.

The Government says there is no inflation. Oh wait. They don’t include food or energy to make it look better.

Blaming the Dollar stores for increasing “food deserts” is a staple for liberal rags.

just remember sometimes the values at the dollar stores arent as good as you think

lots of times staples may be priced lower, but they are smaller sizes, so you aren’t getting a normal size dishwashing soap for a better price, for example

Some stuff it works out like that. Other stuff not so much. A lot of dollar store stuff is just much smaller. .8 ounce deodorant sticks instead of 3 oz. And when you work the math dollar store is more expensive per volume. As always one has to watch what you’re getting and pay attention. Stretching dollars takes work, you can’t just go to the store that says they’re cheap and assume.

Many ‘Apu” owned C-Store practice this.
