The most powerful rocket ever built has now been stacked

Starship 20 is being prepared for stacking atop Super Heavy Booster 4 at Starbase, Texas. The booster already has all 29 Raptor engines installed and the Ship has all three sealevel and all three Vacuum Raptors installed. This will complete the historic first stacking of a complete SpaceX Starship Super Heavy launch system.

This is the most asinine stacking operation I’ve ever seen (of about 100).

Who designed this thing, the Soviets?

Yes...Musk borrowed heavily from existing Russian rocket engine designs.

Here's a recent interview (and tour) Musk gave where he talks about it.

Well, SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy uses 27.

So is 29 do-able?

Doesn’t seem such a stretch.

// Huntsville (AL) Air and Space museum used to have the last full Saturn V laying on its side years ago before they refurbed it for a museum.

I think it’s still there. There is also one in front of JSC in Houston. The one at JSC was going to be Apollo 19, but became a museum piece instead because the mission was scrubbed. I =think= the one at Huntsville was supposed to be Apollo 20.

I think it’s sad that we built 2 entire Saturn V rockets, then just junked them. What a waste.

Doesn’t seem such a stretch.

Raptor has nearly 3X the power of the Merlin. The launch of this stack will be the rough equivalent of three Falcon Heavy launches at once.

South Padre Island is going to boom.

The one you see that's upright is a mock-up - they've got mock-ups of every major phase of our rocket programs - it's pretty cool.

The (real) one that was on its side was prettied-up and moved indoors some where (still on its side).

Great thread!

The following is an important public service announcement for anyone who might be interested, even if most are convinced that I am just messing around saying stupid stuff. Heh, that's the story of my life. :)

The most powerful rocket ever built has now been stacked <<<

In particular, the form of the lamed represents the aspiration of the truly devoted pupil to learn from the mouth of the teacher. The literal meaning of the letter lamed is “to learn” (or “teach”).

>>>

Our Sages refer to the lamed as “a tower soaring in air.” Three hundred laws relate to the secret of this “flying tower.” In our study of Torah, the “flying tower” is the expression of our love and devotion to the teachings of the Torah, our aspiration to conceive its inner truth, lifting us above the “gravity barrier” of earthly preoccupation.

>>>

The only letter ascending above the line.

Worlds:

A three-stage rocket ship soaring into outer space.
Man’s aspiration to understand the universe.

Souls:

A heart of a wise man ascending to comprehend the wisdom of God.
Learning in order to teach, learning in order to do.

Divinity:

Divine inspiration; the higher Shechinah.
Prophetic imagination breaking through the limitations of rational intellect.

https://www.inner.org/hebleter/lamed.htm

Psalm 73:

Man, do I ever miss the old Saturn V rockets.

Huntsville (AL) Air and Space museum used to have the last full Saturn V laying on its side years ago before they refurbed it for a museum.

Just amazing how big that thing was.

NonValueAdded:

So we have moved the Saturn V, up to now the most powerful rocket evah, into second place?

and

"The most powerful rocket in the whole world
and
will blow your head eardrums clean off."

rktman:

We did a lot of “stacking, unstacking, restacking” with shuttle components over the years.

The most powerful rocket ever built has now been stacked

Proof that history repeats in the weirdest ways:

Prophetic imagination breaking through the limitations of rational intellect...

There's a famous story that the Egyptians -- in order to prevent the Jews from going up out of Egypt -- put the bones of Joseph into a heavy metal (or lead,) cabinet (aron: ark, coffin),

and then sunk it in...

de Nile.

Can you hear me now?

Serach not only knew the secret code of Redemption, she told Moses exactly where to search -- in de Nile.

In Huntsville for starters, in zipcode 35808, because the jokes write themselves. :)

Moses stood on the bank of the Nile and said: “Joseph, Joseph, the time regarding which G-d promised that ‘I will redeem you’ has arrived, as well as the time of your oath that you administered on the people of Israel. If you present yourself, good. If not, we are absolved from your oath.” Immediately Joseph’s coffin floated up.

Now you're not going to find them easy to follow. They're not using normal procedures. They're using some kind of code.

Where's Big Joe? over

He's not here. He's pinned down under the bridge. over

>>>

-What's going on?

-We're crossing over.

>>>

Hey Kelly, listen. This is the Grave Diggers Registration Unit. We got a stake in this advance, too, ya know.

Did you ever hear enthusiasm like that in all your life?

Now I realize why it is called ‘Marshall’ Space Flight Center. Nothing like a Marshall stack. 🎸

Just so they launch from the absolute center of the island's mass...

The launches are from the mainland in Boca Chica. South Padre is a good observation point.

He can. He’s not risk averse, and isn’t worried about failure, just prefers failure to not trying. He states (see below) that if that giant booster doesn’t blow up and take out the much more complex ground systems, he’ll consider it somewhat successful.

Check out The Everyday Astronaut’s two (soon to be three-) part walk and talk guided tour with Elon Musk. Ordinarily I don’t watch TEA, but these were too good to skip.

Korolev’s N1 was an amateurish, tech-challenged monstrosity that probably couldn’t be made to work. He died I think in 1966 during (I think) heart surgery, but his big beast kept getting flight tested. The very first test blew up one of the two launch pads/towers that his Moon landing plan required, and that pad was never rebuilt.

The USSR eventually did an unmanned sample return mission to the Moon, a few years after our Apollo missions ended.
