ransomnote: Someone spent alot of time assembling videos and images of the history of the USS Wisconsin. I found the many historical photos at the link interesting and wanted to share it with others this Fourth of July.

4th of July: USS Wisconsin- aka "Wisky" - GIFs - Imgur

USS Wisconsin, fourth and final member of the Iowa class battleships, and the last commissioned American battleship. In the water in 1943, served in three wars, and was only permanently out of commission as of 2009 when it was no longer required that she be kept in readiness even as a museum ship. Finally posted from BB-1 to BB-64. Feels Good. A superb ship to end the list!

When I lived in Bremerton, WA, back before the MO was shipped to Hi-waee, we got to tour her. Those main guns are HUGE. I could stick my head inside the opening of the barrel and not touch any side of it. That was ONE BIG PISTOL shooting down range. They had a marker on the deck where General Mac sat and signed the surrender of the fallen sun.

Geez, the breech block on that gun likely weighed more than my car.

I saw the MO tour when I was a kid, I was most impressed by the battle scars on the armor.
It must have been something crazy when it was happening.
I think it was the MO but they had the Hornet there for some time too.
I got to go on the Nimitz when it was in dry dock too. I was working on maintenance equipment while it was in dry dock.
I saw a huge amount of cargo going on.
There was like 16 basketball hoops being brought on as I recall.
I was thinking about playing ball on that rough flight deck...yowza.
The had to be some smoother ones somewhere below.

You wouldn’t catch any of theses wussy ANTIFA commies or leftist poofters in real battle. They would all be crying for their mommy having already wet their pants just thinking about being shot at.

I saw the USS Alabama and USS Drum in the 1980’s.

Not enough time spent there though. Didn’t get to walk around the aircraft.

I attended the recommissioning of the Iowa at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, MS in 1984. When the command was given to bring the ship to life, it was a thrilling scene.

Many relatives and friends worked the Iowa.

The projos weighed 1800lbs. I had an instructor in GM “A” school who was a Vietnam vet. Said he called for naval gun fire support from a BB. Three rounds of 5” for spot and then they let loose with the big boys. Target was a small island in the middle of a river. He said the 16” projos sounded like a freight train and after it was over, the island was gone and the river was wider and faster! Not sure if it was a true story, but it sounded cool to all of young Gunners.

” He said the 16” projos sounded like a freight train”

Correct. The New Jersy was tasked with demolishing abandoned Camp Carroll west of us. Those 16” shells going over kept us awake most of the night. Incredible noise, much like a train going overhead.

the armor piercing projectile for the Mk 7 16”/50 cal. gun on the Iowa class battleships weighed 2,700 lbs. The High Capacity projectile weighed 1,900 lbs.

I believe the technology used to film the shots could not keep up with reality. In both speed and brightness, the film tech failed and what is left is rainbows. :/

I’m sure it’s an artifact of colorization. /S
Love you, MOD, but this is not an unintentional result of photographic distortion. Subliminal propaganda at its best.

Was recently reading a three book set on the Pacific war.

Read for the first time that the Japanese navy used various color dyes to spot impact splash of their gunnery.

Reminded me of Oddball in Kelly's Heros and the paint cannon shells.

The overall pictorial was very well done. The colorized gif struck a nerve. Carry on.

One of the pics at the link shows the USS Shangri-La doing an unrep. My mom’s brother (an uncle i obviously never knew) was killed aboard Shangri-La in the South Pacific campaigns.

I have toured the Alabama, the Texas and the Lexington. I got to ride on the Lex in 1978 when she was still active. A bunch of us boy scouts went out 200 miles in the Gulf of Mexico and got to watch them launch and retrieve aircraft.

The Texas is a WW 1 era battle wagon with 14 inch guns, but even at that they are huge rifles.

Good stuff.
