The projos weighed 1800lbs. I had an instructor in GM “A” school who was a Vietnam vet. Said he called for naval gun fire support from a BB. Three rounds of 5” for spot and then they let loose with the big boys. Target was a small island in the middle of a river. He said the 16” projos sounded like a freight train and after it was over, the island was gone and the river was wider and faster! Not sure if it was a true story, but it sounded cool to all of young Gunners.

Correct. The New Jersy was tasked with demolishing abandoned Camp Carroll west of us. Those 16” shells going over kept us awake most of the night. Incredible noise, much like a train going overhead.

the armor piercing projectile for the Mk 7 16”/50 cal. gun on the Iowa class battleships weighed 2,700 lbs. The High Capacity projectile weighed 1,900 lbs.
