Forecasters expect the stream to hit Earth on Sunday, May 2, and it could affect Earth's satellite technology.
It has been categorised as a G1 class storm which can lead to “weak power grid fluctuations” and can have a “minor impact on satellite operations”.
Astronomer Tony Phillips wrote on his Space Weather site: "Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on May 2nd when a stream of solar wind is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field.
While this solar storm is largely is insignificant...the Sun can also release solar flares so powerful that they can cripple Earth's technology.
"The probability of an event of that size happening is estimated by the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering as one in 10 in any decade."

Will I even have time to pass gas?
Hope it’s not from Memory Alpha
Usain Bolt can probably outrun it.
At least they did not say it was a “once in a century storm”.
I hate that term.
When I was in college we had two “once in a century flooding events”.
You can do that math. Hyperbole at its finest.
Women and minorities impacted the most. ;-)
The good news is it travels a whole lot slower when you convert the speed to mph.

Actually, that’s correct, that’s the way it works. Once in a century is the probability, but it happen twice in a row.
We had a once in a century river runoff in the Colorado River near my house one year. The next year we had a once in 500 years runoff.
“Once in a century is the probability, but it happen twice in a row.”
That should read: “Once in a century is the probability, but it can happen twice in a row.”
It could happen 5 times in 5 years, but the probability is extremely low.
Dang. Wonder if my automobile warranty is up to date?
What effect will this have on Covid-19 ? J/k
GMAFB.
Just tell me if I can see the northern lights at my latitude (44 deg).
Dang! I missed read this title and was thinking colon storm traveling that fast. My first thought was well I better hang on too my ass, but at least I haven’t gotten Covid. Then I thought, glad I got Ivermectin and D3.
Climate change! How dare we to deny it!
I almost wish it was an asteroid instead.
Don’t you mean 816,000 miles per hour?
Isn’t that little urchin’s 15 minutes up yet? 🤔
Y2K all over again?
