Astronomy Picture of the Day - Earth During a Total Solar Eclipse
APOD.NASA.gov ^ | 29 Dec, 2020 | Video Credit: GOES-16, ABI, NOAA, NASA

Video of December 14, 2020 eclipse shadow at link.

Explanation: What does the Earth look like during a total solar eclipse? It appears dark in the region where people see the eclipse, because that's where the shadow of the Moon falls. The shadow spot rapidly shoots across the Earth at nearly 2,000 kilometers per hour, darkening locations in its path -- typically for only a few minutes -- before moving on. The featured video shows the Earth during the total solar eclipse earlier this month. The time-lapse sequence, taken from a geostationary satellite, starts with the Earth below showing night but the sun soon rises at the lower right. Clouds shift as day breaks over the blue planet. Suddenly the circular shadow of the Moon appears on the left and moves rapidly across South America, disappearing on the lower right. The video ends as nightfall begins again. The next total solar eclipse will occur next December -- but be visible only from parts of Antarctica.

Looks bogus to me.

Even when 95% of the sunlight is blocked by the moon, you would hardly notice it if you weren't looking for the effect. That dark spot is way too big to be real.

You made me look. Above is a map of Africa showing the path of the eclipse. It appears that that dark blob on the original video is the 90% path. Yeah - I have no idea what the shadow would look like from space. (Hmm - wouldn’t the space station have images of it?)

Here are a couple of photos of an eclipse as taken from the ISS. Bad angle and hard to tell the scale (I bet somebody could figure out the scale based on the curvature!) - but it looks pretty cool - and similar to the computer graphic in the OP.

The diameter of the moonโ€™s shadow on the earth averages about 100 miles.

That was taken from a GEO satellite so it is always over the same place on earth. The completely dark earth is night time. Then after sunrise the eclipse shadow moves over South America and east across Africa. They did not explain it very clearly.

I think they did, but I didn’t read the OP closely enough. Cool stuff. My second post about the photos from ISS later on in that article had better photos from other satellites.

This is what the aliens will see when they wipe out all human life on the planet.

Bullsh!t !

I know what I'm talking about. There's no way the eclipse shadow was as wide as it appears in the video.

I am sure the total eclipse spot was pretty small. The shadow must be the area where there was also a partial eclipse. I think there must have been some image processing. The night time Earth was not nearly dark enough either.

A LOT of image processing! NASA should be ashamed of themselves. (Maybe they should go back to Muslim outreach?)

This is one of my favorite Astronomy animations. From a million miles away the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite sees the far side of the Moon as it crosses in front of the Earth.

“Moonshadow”

Cat Stevens

Oh, I’m bein’ followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin and hoppin’ on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow

And if I ever lose my hands, lose my plough, lose my land,
Oh if I ever lose my hands, Oh if... I won’t have to work no more.
And if I ever lose my eyes, if my colours all run dry,
Yes if I ever lose my eyes, Oh if... I won’t have to cry no more.

Yes I’m bein’ followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin’ and hoppin’ on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow

And if I ever lose my legs, I won’t moan, and I won’t beg,
Yes if I ever lose my legs, Oh if... I won’t have to walk no more.
And if I ever lose my mouth, all my teeth, north and south,
Yes if I ever lose my mouth, Oh if... I won’t have to talk...

Did it take long to find me? I asked the faithful light.
Did it take long to find me? And are you gonna stay the night?

I’m bein’ followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin’ and hoppin’ on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
